I am always looking for tricks with interesting plots. What do you guys think is the trick with the best plot? I mean really creative tricks, unique because of their plots, not just cards turning over or switching places. I would have to go with Paul Harris' sidewinder.

Sam the Bellhop, just because the fun doesn't stop until 52 cards are down!

Curtis Kam has some interesting ideas on this. As far as his thoughts on patter and theatrics for close up/stand up magic. Especially his presentation for the 21 cent trick. Get his Dangerous Notions lecture notes. Well worth it. My favorite is Hamman's Gemini Twins (the possibilities are endless) and all of the "Sam the Bellhop" family of tricks. Also the Vernon Ace Cutting routine with the one armed gambler is a favorite. I love stories and storytelling in magic is often overlooked.

I've always been fond of the Cannibal Card premise when working for laymen. It's quick, visual, and the story is easy to follow. Just ****es me off sometimes how much easier it is to patter with cards as opposed to coins......lol

How about Stewart James' version of "Further Than That"?

No Contest. The best plot for a card trick EVER:
The Frog Prince. A hysterical script, filled with puns and jokes that play for both adults and kids. A Souvenir that’s not just a lame-ass signed card, but something really special that is made for the spectator right there before their eyes. An Impossible Transposition |

I like doing further than that especially if you properly space out the multiple endings so that your spectators will appreciate it more.

If you're looking to learn about card plots, then check out the routines by Ron Bauer. He calls them scripts as they detail the handlings and language as well as the thinking behind each. It's all good stuff and some I consider to be the best "plotting" and reasoning out there.

Anniversary Waltz, Everywhere and Nowhere, Frog Prince, and the Cannibals, plus the card under drink/ on forehead - not really a plot until you do it repeatedly.

Interesting post. Can someone briefly explain the Frog prince routine?

I like the premise of the classic eleven card trick. With proper audience management the audience will have no idea how it is done. Its also quite a long routine with multiple climaxes.

Todsky,
Words really can't describe the Frog Prince. Beg, borrow, or steal Michael Close's video to see it performed. You need to see the routine in action. It would be like trying to explain Star Wars in one sentence. |

Star wars: Two androids avoid the mistake of HAL9000 and appeal to human weakness as they topple a republic, build and then destroy an empire, all to ensure a universe safe for their kind.
Have you read the Hofzinser card material? Surprisingly deep and poetic stuff.

Lucas was saving that for the latest film. Probably how the princess of Nabu hides among her assistants.

May the 'Force' always be with you, whether it's Lucas' or the classic.

Re : Star wars/Elmsley Count
Notice how the "new" STAR WARS movie is a prequel--maybe one we've seen already? Anyway just a question about the term plot as applied to magic: I've always taken it to mean the bare bones of what happens as opposed to the story woven around it. That is, the plot of Card to wallet is: a selected card is found in a wallet. There are all sorts of entertaining presentations/stories that can be woven around that, but that is something other than plot. What say you? Jack Shalom

Good question Jack, as engineers we discuss EFFECT, PRESENTATION, and METHOD. From a theatrical perspective, it's the script and the story, where the plot is an overview of the story arc.
The card to wallet plot is usually something like: The performer makes a wager with a volunteer for the contents of his wallet as regards finding a selected card. Upon failing his own challenge, the wallet contents are found to include the selected card.

The EFFECT of Frog Prince is the Transposition of two objects.
The PLOT of Frog Prince is much more complex. A spectator can describe the effect in a single sentance, but they'll spend considerably more time telling you about the performance. |
