Presumably, all of us who read this section of the forum are interested in the history of magic as it is written. Presumably, those of us who are interested in the history of magic are also interested in getting it right.
I would like to point out that there never was a Viennese magician named Hofzinger. And, there never was a French magician named Houdin. The man who has often been considered the father of modern card magic was Hofzinser. The French magician who is called the father of modern conjuring was Robert-Houdin. His first name was not Robert. That was his last name, until he married Mademoiselle Houdin. With special permission from the French government, he was allowed to adopt the old fashioned hyphenated last name by attaching her name to his, calling himself Robert-Houdin. To refer to him as Houdin in any context is wrong. Please pardon my rant. This is one of the things that really gets up my nostril. Oh, and it was Buatier, not Bautier de Kolta.

Bill,
I have to agree, some of the spelling I see here makes me wonder about our education in this country. Apparently, it is easier to graduate now as opposed to when I attended school...I do admit my graduation year was 1961, so a little over the hill, but I can spell... Rennie
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

I think it's a matter of not caring. It's laziness.
I have posted about this problem often. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......tart=0#4

I'm constantly amazed at the magic historians and "experts" who can tell you the thread count of Houdini's underwear, but can't get these names right. It taints the data.
It's a lot like someone writing a book about Carl Bream.

It's sometimes surprising that they know the name (sort of) in the first place - but blithely asking about Harvey Blakestern and putting their hands over their ears and going "babababa...just give me the answers...babababa" doesn't exactly help, either.

Just curious. Would you really walk up to Erich Weisz/Weiss and suggest he change his stage name to "Harry Roberti" just to be culturally/historically correct? Somehow "The Great Roberti" does not have the panache of "The Great Houdini." I still think Shakespeare had it right: "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." And I think a reporter did once mention to Houdini that the proper pronunciation of his stage name should be something like "ooo-dan-eee," but I can't remember what Harry's response was...

Houdini was an entity unto himself. You know exactly what I am referring to. Try not to be an equus asinus. BTW, "Houdini" does not mean "like Houdin" in Italian or Latin. In Italian, it means "a little Houdin."

Just to set the record straight for future references of magic history.
It's Frances with an 'E' not an 'I'. I'm a girl with girl parts.

So, Marshall Thornside goes by the name of Frances? I'm soooo confused.
Bill, I think what you're witnessing is what happens when everyone is an authority, and a medium that differentiates between an expert and a novice. The lowest common denominator wins, and how is an ignorant person supposed to know that it wasn't Robert Houdin when the person who asserted it has 6,000 posts and 900 Twitter followers? And I agree, it's a *** shame. |

Haha...yep, that's right, Gordon.
It's much easier for people to correctly spell Marshall than Frances. It's all about phonics.

Well, I just got my copy of the book "Beating A Dead Horse".
For me to share Frances Marshall's name, it would have been completely impossible for Sandy to screw this one up for me. HOWEVER... In the index and in the book, it is spelled correctly. IRONICLY, in the Acknowledgements, it is spelled INCORRECTLY. ODDLY enough, my name is not with my parents (both mom and dad are together, and I'm somewhere down the line). Which is fine and humorous to me. So again, I must do my little lecture on how to spell my name: It is with an "E", not an "I", or no vowel at all. For I am a girl, not a boy. THEREFORE, I have girl parts.

Ever so important for one to use correct names. Too often, today's writing suggests that the author's senior year was the 4th grade.

I recall your story being mentioned in 'Magic Makers' by I.G. Edmonds and possibly even Jim Steinmeyer's 'Glorious Deception.' I also remember I.G. Edmonds mentioning De Kolta, and if my memory is correct, I think you can even MagicPedia it. He is the one that shot his pregnant wife by accident doing the bullet catch for royalty of a sort. Correct me if I am wrong. After all, that is the whole point of all this.

I don't believe that is correct. Where did you read that? It's not on MagicPedia.
