Haven't registered, yet. I should be there, though. What happened to Schoolcraft? I thought they were going to be a dealer.
The hotel website says no rooms available for the convention dates. Not looking good for me, now. |

So...
I'm just getting an opportunity to sit down and review this year's Carolina Close Up Convention. Needless to say, this was an AMAZING weekend. There were several huge highlights for me and I'd like to take the opportunity to discuss each: THE Sleight Club Lecture- For those of you who don't know, Sleight Club is an intimate group of guys who get together once a week to seriously discuss their magic. This isn't a group that just showcases their latest moves, but take a routine someone is working on, breaking it down to see what is and isn't good, then building it back up to make that routine or move as strong as it can possibly be. In their discussions, periodically they get something that is both good and noteworthy. The lecture I attended( their second ever lecture) contained material created in these meetings. Some of my favorite material included Scott Robinson's Sliding Scale and The Money Changers, BoB Taylor's KT Rattler(there are some EXCELLENT coin applications possible with this device), Max Nelsons Slap The Monkey, Doc Docherty's Groove Electric Switch, and Chris Hannibal's Pringles Act( some of you may remember parts of this routine from The Magic Menu). These guys have put together one hell of a lecture and really think it would be worth anyone's time and attention to attend. There's something for everyone, and each trick seems to get better than the next. This convention presented a rare opportunity for a young guy like myself to sit down with one of the most prolific theorists in our trade, Al Schnieder. We discussed a large array of topics. The two items that stand out more than any we discussed were our discussions on "Theatre Magic vs. Virtual Magic" and the concept of magic as a TECHNOLOGY rather than as an ART. Rather than getting into the specifics here, I invite you to attend a workshop from this great man, and challenge learn about his theories, his magic and his thought process. One of my good friends here on the Café, Bill Citino, gave an excellent lecture on coins and cards. The card material came directly out of his book CoinSomnia and the card work came from his lecture notes T3. Bill(for those of you who don't know) is working magician from South Jersey, who has practical effective magic for laymen that looks great. One of my favorite Citino routines is called Comin' Outta The Box, which is a dynamic okito box routine that has to be seen to believe. This was my first time meeting Mike Skutt up close. I met him a couple of years ago at Bob Littles Super Sunday, but wasn't able to concentrate on his lecture because of the noise going on in the background. I was eager this time around to see what I may have missed, and I wasn't disappointed. Skutt is a true showman, a great magician, and a seriously nice guy. I'll be using his Kiss The Magician effect as soon as I've got it down. Like all the others I've mentioned, try NOT to pass a chance by to see Skutt in action. Anyone who's studied cards seriously knows the name Ray Kosby. Ray is known for his incredible ability to make extremely difficult sleight of hand look effortless, and for being a creative genius. His magic is quick, visual, magical and original. Most of us know of his effect Raise Rise using the Ambitious Riser move, but not too many people are familiar with his non-card items. Quite frankly, I came to watch Ray do cards, but had more questions about his Ticket routine than I did Smudge or his Oil and Water. If you ever get to see Ray give a lecture, have him show his rubber band trick, his color changing apple, and the torn and restored ticket. If you're jaw doesn't drop, then you aren't breathing. Brett Loudermilk was the wild card at this convention and stole the show. He didn't do any magic, but his act was magicial nonetheless. Brett is a sideshow peroformer, specializing in swallowing swords and breathing fire. His act is incredible, and even at 19, he's quickly earning his "Freak Prodigy" name. Look out for Brett in the future. This guy's a beast!!!!!! Thanks to Chastain for hosting another terrific convention. I can't wait to see who will be on the bill next year!!!!!

Thanks for the compliment Eric. It was good hanging out with you again. Also nice review. That convention was a lot of fun. I liked all the events.
I'm not trying to steal your thunder Eric, but I wanted to add my praise to Chastain and the other performers. I apologize for breaking the first rule of Sleight Club. I had been looking forward to seeing the Sleight Club lecture since I had heard about them. I have never seen a lecture like that where a whole group of magicians worked together to come up with the material. It was diverse, practical, and surprising. I especially liked the KT Rattler, and the Groove Electric Switch. I had seen Bill Citino earlier this year. He has really good coin work. That open coin vanish of his blows me away. I had never seen Al Schneider perform before. I can't believe the retention he get's with his coin vanish. I also really liked his zombie routine. Mike Skutt's mug trick is brilliant. I had been wanting to come up with something like that for about a decade. I liked his show too. Brett's lecture and show were terrific. I'm going to try smashing my finger tomorrow. I'll definitely be attending next year's convention. Ray |

I'll defiantly be back next year if time allows and if Chastain lets me back in! The tour is really awesome so far. Just FYI I'm posting video chunks on youtube. Just search "BrettLoudermilk" they'll turn up. Brett.
