I had recently purchased a jumbo appearing straw (it's mostly white, with a red stripe & a yellow stripe), and upon playing around with it, I noticed you can do the paddle move with it.
Just something different that you may be able to incorporate into an existing routine!

Hi folks,
Check out the Pygmy Paddle from my notes, Nothing Up My (Green) Sleeves. It is also in the Magic Menu and appeared in MAGIC magazine. Regards, Paul Green |

Hi Paul,
Saw your Pygmy Paddle Trick last night in Sydney, Australia. Great trick and leaves the spectator with a souvenir. I personally use the Colour Changing Knives (which you also demonstrated) for adults and the Hot Rod for Children. |

Don't get upset folks, but I think Hot Rod and its spinoffs suck... the REEK magic prop... the color changing knives (see Whit Haydn's and Juan Tamariz handling) makes more sense, but for ME... the oldest of olde, the Edward Victor Bat Trick (paddle with chalk lines) is one of the strongest items in my close up repertoire... based on AUDIENCE reactions.

I always use Amazing Jumping Arrow. Presenting it right from the start as my "micro" magic wand ;-)

Well, Hot Rod and the spinoffs only reek of "magic prop" if they are presented that way. Unfortunately, that is exactly how they are usually presented. There are many, many other ways to make the prop look "un-proppy" (if there is such a word; well, there is NOW!). For example, I NEVER suggest it's just a rod; if I'm working a bar, I use a swizzle stick, with a large flat end. What could be more logical and "un-proppy" (there's that word again!)? As for the color-changing knives, I positively HATE the much-stolen opening of Ron Wilson: "Did anyone here lose a red knife?" I only wish a "with-it" customer would say "yes", grab the knife and pocket it, and resume his conversation with the rest of the table. It would serve the table-hopper right! |

My girlfriend taught me a new paddle trick just last night. Boy, it was magical!

I'm certain many of you already know this (but then again, maybe not)... but if you use paper matches torn from a matchbook, usually one side of the match is black, the other is brown. Wa La! Color changing matches.

I have not used it yet, but Sankey has a cute one that uses chopsticks with something printed on the side of them.

probably not an original idea, but i use a swizzle stick, usually they have a logo at the end but only on one side, then as a quicky i say you can tell the class of the place by the swizzle sticks, a fairly inexpensive bar or restaurant has sticks with no logo, those with a higher rating have sticks with a logo on both sides, and of course we are in a regular medium class spot and as you can see the logo is on one side only, hand it to the nearest spectator and go on to the next effect, i use this as an opener

Is no one going to mention the Money Paddle? It's got the most surprises of all the one paddle routines.
Yes, it's coins again. I do seem to have a one-track mind.....

Edward Victor Bat Trick?
Just wondering where one would find this version of the paddle effect. Was it published in his "Magic Of Edward Victors Hands" book? |
