The thread started by Inert made me wonder ... . What was your very first Tenyo item ever?
For me it was Credit Slasher, bought in the late nineties from a toywebshop in France. Never cared about it being 'Tenyo' as I wasn't aware of the collectors value of these items. It was only in 2004 I realised the company's name of the effect was 'Tenyo' and found out they had dozens of these tricks and they released a few new ones every year ... and discontinue them a few years later most of the time I took my box of magic tricks and found out I had other of these Japanese toy-like items without realizing it ... . They were, if I remember correctly, What's Next, Invisible Zone, Crystal Cleaver and Parabox. I looked up shops in Holland and Belgium and found some Tenyo-duplicates (because I thought genuine Tenyo was too expensive ) that I bought: Gravity Rock, Trisector, Mini Morphosis, Oh No!, Future Clock, Impossible pen and a few others were among them. They didn't work at all! The shop gave me a partial refund and I immediately bought the regular, Tenyo versions (only one of them - should have bought a few Mini Morphosis's back then for 15 EURO each ). The website by Angelo Carbone got me started after that. My last purchase was a mint Against Gravity, from someone in Holland for 15 EURO ... . As you see good deals are still possible. For all of you only recently started collecting, be very patient and search, search, search ... . You really have to put effort in it. Search internet, phone every magic shop you know of or look up on Internet, visit every magic shop (they sometimes aren't aware they have old Tenyo) in a range of 200 - 300 miles. Buy old stuff, exchange for other old stuff, or sell so you have a back-up fund for other, rare and expensive Tenyo's that pop up once in a while on Ebay. And last but not least, there are a lot of very nice people on this forum that will help you and exchange items with you or sell them for decent prices (although sometimes 'decent' it relative of course ... most of us are well aware of the value of them, so this perhaps isn't the best place to do super-bargains of course ). By the way I have about half of my old packagings left (threw the others away unfortunately), just a few years ago I realized packaging is important for most of us. |

My first was Tricky Business in the late 80's... thought it would be a cool way to hand out my business card. Picked up the odd Tenyo trick here and there as well as the Magic Works series by Milton Bradley. Really got serious about collecting a couple of years ago. Most recent purchase was Zone Infinity, I had the MB Magic Works version but not the standard Tenyo one (the keys are diffrent)

Ah. Who can ever forget their 1st time? I was young. I was foolish. Maybe a little too much wine. She glistened in the moonlight, beckoning me. I could not resist her charms. We embraced. Oh sweet Phanto Block how we frolicked together. My 1st time

My first Tenyo was Dynamic Coins packaged as Marvin's Magic. It was being demonstrated at Harrods in London when I was on vacation in the mid 90's. I remember trying it on the plane and thinking something was missing (Tenyo employees talk about this). That was my first magic trick purchased as an adult. I would buy tricks when I went on vacation. Bought some in Boston (not Tenyo). I would always describe what I liked and wanted. Tricks with gimmicks and gadgets. I didn't want to pay for just routines.
After seeing the Lance Burton Magic Show in Las Vegas in 2003, I went to the Magic Shop outside the theater and told the magician what I liked. He immediately showed me Crystal Cleaver and identified Tenyo to me. I then went to another shop in LV to see what other Tenyo I could by. I always knew what kind of tricks I liked and now I knew that Tenyo was making them. I came home and order about 20 tricks from Magic Legends, Hank Lee, Tannens. I bought some Tenyo here and there over the years, but something in October got me interested again. Then I found Stereo's site and made a list of all the great performers that I didn't have. I started getting them and then the disease started to set in. I went from getting just the great ones, to every one, to every one not opened, to every one not opened in English packaging. I think the key is not letting the disease get to a point where you are just collecting and not performing or playing with them. Right now I am buying many, the postman is a daily visitor, but opening and trying a lot of them too. AA |

LOL Inert!
Totally agree with Killertweety's thoughts above about diligent searching. I have ordered from numerous shops around the world, from multiple ebay sellers and a few kind folks here on the Café (including Killertweety). I am very happy to say that I have not been burned on any transaction (knock on wood!) Magic generally is made up of an honest group. As little as a couple of years ago my local Magic shop had multiple copies of the Crystal Pyramid for $18 each. I stupidly said to myself why would I want more than one copy? They are all gone now and I slapped myself on the head! John |

My first Tenyo trick was the Coin from Fan, which they used to demonstrate hundreds of times a day at Tannen's magic shop. Who knows how many thousands they sold. My second Tenyo trick was Dr. Sawa's "Fantastic," that crazy matchbox wth the magnetic labels that is now so rare.

Dynamic Coins for me. I wish Tenyo did more with materials other than plastic. I rocked a lot of people's worlds with that little brass masterpiece.
Most recently it was the entire set of 2012 releases.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

If I remember correctly my first Tenyo was soft coins. After that I was hooked. Over the years I would pick up a Tenyo trick or two. Some years more some years less. A friend of mine who has a nine year old, and is a big Harry Potter fan is getting interested in magic, so I got him Flash Dice. He was thrilled and has been practicing everyday since he got the trick. Told him to never reveal the secret. Loves to drive his cousin crazy by demonstrating the trick and then not giving away the secret. Takes the magician's code very seriously, 'cause Harry Potter would too. My most recent purchase was Ghost Lamp.

My first Tenyo trick was an Invisible Zone.
I was looking for an inexpensive Tenyo trick to start out with. I searched until I found an Invisible Zone for around $5 or so on an Online Magic Store. So I ordered it but it turned out to be one of those cheap copies of Invisible Zone that didn't even work. I ended up calling the shop to complain as the picture on the website showed the Tenyo version! The owner was nice enough to acknowledge the mistake and send me the Tenyo version instead. Buying additional Tenyos after that went a lot smoother albeit a lot more expensive |

Was in my local magic shop yetsrday and picked up a used but in mint condition Midas Machine with instructions for $10. You never know when a good deal might happen. I already have one but at $10 it would not have been right to leave it there <g>.

I almost always did What's Next when I did kids birthday shows...also Tenyo's Rainbow Silks with my Crystal Silk Cylindar, though I almost forgot through the years that Rainbow Silks was in fact Tenyo's. I remember it simply as 20th Century Silks. I often did the Coin Fan also for a quickie.
Probably the very first though was Cubio, my little buddy "hymie" who would always obey my whispered "instructions" and stop and fall at my command. Then in the 70's came Mini-Zag which a Tannen's demonstrator fooled me badly with. |
