In fact the most deceptive shirt is probably a partially black one. I have a black and gray shirt that works great. Also, in regards to head and shoulders, you don't need a black shirt. Black pants/jeans work just fine. If you have any specific questions about your particular shirt, feel free to send me a PM. Platt

Hi this sounds pretty good. A couple of quick questions. Black shirt, no problem but I wondered just how good this is as a closeup outside in the daytime. I am a tennis pro who performs some magic in some of my lessons and speaking engagments. I have found tis a great way to relax my students and break the ice with new people. I am in shorts a lot (which I assume is no factor) but the sunny day thing is what I am wondering about. (For example I don't do invisible thread outdoors!)

On 2009-05-25 20:57, Tennispro wrote: Tennispro, that’s a very good question. But not a particularly easy one to universally answer. I personally perform this absolutely every single chance I get. That has included well over a thousand performances taking place in dark bars, fluorescent lit offices, subways, restaurants, just about every street in Gramercy Park and in every imaginable morning, midday and late afternoon sun. Yes, I’m a bit addicted to my own gimmick. For me and my Blackout! routines, the lighting is a non-issue. I apologize if this sounds brash or self-aggrandizing but it’s the truth: I fry people every single time I perform this. Now let me make clear that I’ve worked extremely hard on my Blackout! routines (and any routine I perform publicly). I feel that with coin magic, especially gimmicked coin magic (Blackout! included), you absolutely have to geek out and put in the time. That's actually what I love about coin magic. If you don’t have the spectators in the palm of your hand, they have you in the palm of theirs. So again, for me (and I believe anybody willing to put in the practice) the possibilities with Blackout! are endless. Is Blackout!, in and of itself, a cloak of invisibility that is absolutely immune to all lighting? Absolutely not. Is a double lift get-ready, in and of itself, invisible? Absolutely not. If you put in your due diligence will anyone ever see either one? No. So Tennispro, to answer your question, Blackout! can be performed brilliantly in all lighting conditions including the bright sun. That said, you and only you will know if you can perform this brilliantly in all lighting conditions including the bright sun. Best Platt

Just a quick word to say that Blackout! is a lovely solution. It's well made, simple, flexible, and brilliantly effective in the right situation.
This is not, however, a self-worker by any means. It takes practice and a command of misdirection. With those things mastered, though, I would say it could be used confidently under most any lighting conditions. Roy, Brian, and Mike: well done, gentlemen! Thanks, Neil

I've performed this a handful of times and wanted to post some observations
- This is NOT sleight free. It uses one basic "pinch". - Body hair can be a problem. Unless you like having Band-Aid full of hair ripped out, be prepared to shave part of your belly. - Misdirection is critical. They will see the coin if it's in their DIRECT line of vision and it's bright. Keeping your hands close to the body helps quite a bit as this provides better cover. I really like the thinking and design of the product. The flexibility of what you wear is a big plus (has to be black!). I've done this in a T shirt so far, next time will be a button down shirt. It will require a commitment to perform it if you are hairy, but it has been worth it for me. If you are a coin guy you need one of these...and a razor. |

Undershirt wouldn't work with a T-shirt, but I will try attaching it to the shirt! Thanks Neil.

This coin is SOOOOO easy and FUN to use.
I have my black t-shirt on (or take my jacket off when I do this -- bare arms). I ask the spectator if they have ever played that game where you guess what hand the coin is in. I then tell them I am practicing my magic misdirection .. and to see if they can tell me what hand I finally leave the coin in. Then I do some wierd moves in front of them and they guess .. I try to flash it so that they get it right a few times ... so I am conditioning them that the coin is in one hand or the other. The kicker comes in when the coin vanishes. People are FREAKED OUT and start looking at the ground, the ceiling and some have even grabbed at my arms to see if the coin was under my skin (I kid you not). This is soooo easy to do!!! Folks, this is what real magic looks like!!!!!!!! |

Neil- great to hear from you. I'm thrilled that your finding great uses for this.
Tpax- your comments cracked me up. I'm a pretty hairy guy and I can relate to your plight but I promise you it's a non-issue. If you need it, a little rubbing alcohol, baby oil, or even vodka resolves the issue. I'll send you a PM with some additional tips. Anyhow, I'm glad your successfully using it and enjoying it. That's what's important. Brett- we've successfully made quite a few custom coins. it's possible we could make one out of a poker chip. if it doesn't work absolutely perfectly we just won't make it. But my gut tells me a poker chip could be done. I'll consult with Roy and we'll get back to you. if you could send me an email with an attached image of the chip, that would be helpful. Magicianofthecentury: I like the humble user name. And I also like your review. Thanks. AmazingStevo: That's a great idea! I actually have played around with the "guess which hand" approach. The set-up/conditioning you mention is key. Nice thinking. And what can I say..I agree, done right it looks like real magic! Lawrens- I'm happy you finally received your coin. I look forward to see how you work it into your 3 fly routine. I'm continually impressed with all the creative thinking that goes on here at the Café. With all the childish, and even occasionally vicious back and forth that can develop on the Café (and all blogs/forums), it's easy to forget how much freaking talent this place attracts. I'll soon be posting a password protected "tips and tricks" section at plattmagic.com for owners of Blackout! This section will include all the fantastic ideas I've received (with your permission) as well as my own updated handlings and routines. Keep 'em coming! Platt

I just received Blackout yesterday and it's great.
It's refreshing to see a product that isn't over hyped, but just works as advertised. The design of the coin is perfect, along with the other packaged items. I wish the DVD would of spent a little bit more time on some of the sleights for the beginner magician, since a few intermediate sleights are helpful for some of the effects. I did like the way Platt touched on misdirection. It's surprising how often this subject isn't mentioned on instructional dvds. But Blackout is great, it provides ultra clean vanishes and productions on it's own, but toss in some good basic sleight of hand, and watch the magic happen. |

Blackout Tips & Tricks” is up! I’ve posted seven or so new tips/handlings for Blackout in four separate videos. Includes coin thru glass, a sleight-free coin transposition, a new vanishing & coin change technique, working the Tumbling Muscle Click pass into your Blackout! routine, and more. As a bonus, I’ve also included one of my favorite routines off of Catapult!- The Linking Lifesavers. If you own Blackout go to the “tips and tricks” section of plattmagic.com and enter:
USER NAME: blackout (all lowercase) PASSWORD: the password is the last name of the “line producer” in the production crew list of credits (not the first grouping of credits) at the very end of the dvd. (all lowercase) Enjoy, Brian Platt

I have been away from the Café for a couple of weeks due to an overload of work. I don't seem to get two minutes recently but I have made a vow to spend a bit more time on the Café.
That being said I have to say how much I love this gimmick. Platt is one of my favourite coin workers and his Catapult DVD is brilliant. So I knew when he had a gimmicked coin available I had to get it. I brought it without even seeing the trailer that's how much faith I have in this man's products. Anyway a couple of weeks ago I had my walking liberty coin come through the post. I eagerly watched the DVD and was amazed at the clever thinking that has gone into this product. Seriously this gimmick is brilliant, probably the best new gimmick to come out in the realm of coin magic this last year. The DVD is well produced, the routines are awesome and the teaching is great. I have been working this in for the past couple of weeks and the reactions you get are insane. It makes me feel really happy inside that with a little tweeking of my routines I can end any routine super clean any time I want. If you even a little creative be prepared to have the ideas fly out. I have already some up with a few things that I want to share with Platt when he has a few minutes. The best recommendation I can give this gimmick is this true story. AT the end of this month I am competing in a fairly important magic competition. I had my act worked out and I had my opening coin routine sorted and in place. Having worked with Blackout for a while I have decided to change the coin routine in places to allow me to use Blackout. The use of the gimmick makes the routines easier, cleaner and I think more fooling for magicians. The only problem - my coin routine HAS to use Morgan Dollars for it to work properly. So last week I ordered another Blackout off Platt - this time a Silver Morgan Dollar. Another $100 + but I didn't bat an eyelid. Why? Simple I know that I am getting more than my money's worth. Platt, thank you for releasing this gem of a gimmick. Thanks for sharing your clever thinking and routining with the magical community and thanks in advance for helping me win my competition!!! Craig What are you lot waiting for? Go and buy a blackout!!!!!! |

Platt,
Love the customer service! The T and T section is great! Already working on the Linking LifeSavers routine... Respectfully, Rochaz

Craig, wow, that is fantastic. Best of luck of with the competition. I love your work with gimmicked coins so it's a thrill to know you're successfully using Blackout! Please pass on any tips and handlings and let me know how things turn out at the competition.
Rochaz, it's my pleasure to put out these additional Blackout tips and effects. I'm going to regularly update the section so keep an eye out for new videos. The Linking LIfesavers is one of my favorite effects off of Catapult so it's a pleasure to share it with Blackout owners as the psychology closely parallels that of the new "Sneaky Clean-up Repeat" handling.
