Here's a weird idea for a thread:
What pet peeves* do you share with many, if not most, other people in your region/country/state/territory/city/county? For example, many people who live in states such as Nevada, Colorado or Oregon hate it when their respective state names are pronounced incorrectly. Some get annoyed in Illinois! Heck, in Missouri, they have two different preferred pronunciations! Most people can pronounce "New Mexico" correctly, but people who live there often have to deal with people and organ...... country! * Pet Peeve: A pet peeve (or pet hate) is a minor annoyance that an individual or group identifies as particularly annoying to them, to a greater degree than others may find it. |

I don't share this one, so it doesn't really address the original post, but since you brought up the geographical bit... It bugs the hell out of me when people around here (southern CA) correct others' pronunciation of foreign geographical locations, but they themselves call Los Angeles "loss ann jell ess." If you can't say the name of the city you live in with the proper original inflection, then don't have an aneurysm when your place of origin gets Americanized.

I haven't been to L.A. much, but isn't this the correct pronunciation?

Well, it's the Americanized version, but the words aren't English.

According to what I've found on the internet, there are at least 26 ways to pronounce "Los Angeles".
It's an American city, so I go with the American version of the name. As soon as it's part of Spain, I'll use the Spanish version. The same goes for Nevada. (Come to think of it, there's a 3rd pronunciation of Nevada, used for the town of Nevada, Missouri.) |

The informal term for an Australia is Aussie. This is pronounced Ozzie, like in Ozzie and Harriet. Calling us Osseys makes us think bad things about you.

There's a street by me named Lahser (lah-sir). But many people in my city call it Lasher. This really annoys the students at Lahser High.

Here it's the way some folks pronounce the name of our state.
We like Oregon pronounced " OR-E-GUN, not OR-A-GONE. Bob. |

Scott about 2-3 years ago N.B.C. news did a report on the correct way to pronounce Nevada. They did a very good job and researching it and found out that the way those of us that are natives pronounce it is correct. Linguistic experts even said any other way of saying it is wrong! I already knew that of course and will correct anyone that does not say Nevada correctly.

Houston Street in NYC is not pronounced like the city in Texas. We pronounce it How-sten.

I wonder what Brett Favre would say about pronounciation? Here in Birmingham we pronounce tha name differently than the same-named city in England. It just takes us longer to say it. Mobile, AL is pronounced, mo-BEEL. I'm originally from Illinois, and people down south continuously pronounce the silent "s".

I've lived in Göttingen for fifteen years, but can't really pronounce it properly on the fly. I have to stop, concentrate, get my mouth shaped right, and then I still probably sound like an American. Those umlauts are tough.
But I thought this thread was about any sort of pet peeves shared by a region, not just place mispronunciations. I can't think of any. |

Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

All right, let me ask how many of you around here share this pet peeve of mine about the Café:
Original Poster: "Name your five favorite whoochiemahickers". Next poster: "1: bla bla. 2: bla bla. 3. bla bla. 4. bla bla. 5. bla bla. 6 bla bla. 7. bla bla [and so on...] 16. bla bla." Actually, the same could happen with the question "what is your SINGLE FAVORITE dingsboom of all time?" Again, people can't count. I've seen threads with someone asking for a single answer in which someone posts a bibliography worth of a MA thesis. That's my Café pet peeve. Anyone share it? |

There is an area, not sure where, in Ca where people either say "the 405" (as in the 405 freeway), or "405". Where I live, in the northern part, we say it correctly-680 is 680.

I have a few pet peeves. I don't like line-jumping at amusement park rides. I don't like seeing people driving around in convertables with the tops open but the windows up!
My greatest pet peeve is seeing people wearing socks with sandals!!!!
