Hi david..
so glad to be able to message u!! well could you kindly give me some advice on how to be funny without actually being ridiculous? I mean I love telling jokes and make people laugh , but when I stick it to magic, I just don't really get a laugh...and that's quite embarrassing.. so how do you match magic with jokes? thx lots best regards Raph. |

Hi Raph,
It's tough to give a total stranger advice on how to be funny. That's the kind of conversation your parents should have with you when you reach puberty. Personally, I stopped doing magic in my stand-up comedy act for years because comedy clubs in North America demand a high laughs-per-minute ratio, and every time I took out a deck of cards, the act slowed down. But I had a breakthrough a couple of years ago with one trick - a routine I published in RANDOM ACTS OF MAGIC called PARTY OF SIX that gives me a chance to bring six people up on stage and interact with them, improvise with them, play with them as the effect unfolds in a way that I was never able to accomplish with a burnt bill routine, or a spoon-bending bit, or a simple card revelation, all of which I tried at one time or another. So maybe the solution for you is just to find material that suits your comedy sensibilities. Are you fast-paced and crazy, or sophisticated and droll? Not every style of comedy suits every funny person. Max Maven could never do the Baffling Bra, but he still slides some great lines into his mentalism act. Come to think of it, Max Maven doing the Baffling Bra would probably be hilarious. |

Helpful advice yet again. Thanks
If I read you correctly, It's not so much being original but being ourselves and performing magic that fits who our character / personality.
Many Blessings!!
