Hi everyone,
I recently did a short 15 minute act for a fundraiser in a bar/restaurant on small stage with cut'n'restored rope, rings (Haydn) and cards (Ratpack), and got asked later if I had anything else that to please let them know. In my bag, I did have a vanishing cane to silks with confetti, some coins and a jumbo, rope, and of course a deck of cards (lots of effects there, only 2 or 3 for stage use)... lots of tricks, but more importantly I didn't have another routine setup in mind. So, of course, I didn't feel like 'jazzing' it on stage without practicing. I recall that Jeff McBride suggested to have an emergency set of effects in case something goes wrong technically, which saved him a few times. My question is whether or not you guys save an extra routine in case they want an encore on stage, or maybe afterwards you could do some walk-around close-up magic. thanks |

Being ,ainly a close up artist I have several sets on me eg some ones seen me before I also hold some tricks back for those speical moments I think the same can be said about stage magic although its a lot more rutend than bar and walk around where same times you have to think on your feet what harm could it do creating another routene

I always carry my close-up case, and usually linking rings and cups and balls.
Jumbo cards and other stuff I don't plan on using. Is surprising now often plans change when I get to a gig. This afternoon I was to do a childrens show and found four childden and about thirty adults. To stick a box in the car of extra stuff is no hardship. and I always carry an amplifier, just in case. Always have something extra !! |

Having some back ups always is a good idea. You never know when murphy's law will strike. Even doing close-up I try to have a few extra's plus if a trick requires a reset (say like scotch and soda), I try to have at least two sets, so you don't have to leave to set up again. Of course I never do the same routine in front of the same audience, may use a similar method, or do a different effect with same materials, etc. Being prepared is never bad. Had a coin slide once malfunction on me, and being prepared was able to save the trick. How you recover is often the sign of ur professionalism.
