Let's see, John...in thirty plus years...hmmm...OK, here's just a few:
1. If your silks start to look ratty/dirty...wash/replace them! It's embarrassing when someone comments about how pathetic it looks, LOL! 2. If you do Multiplying Billiard Balls, don't perform with your "practice" ones, have TWO sets, the other is for PERFORMANCE ONLY...you want CLEAN, bright and not sticky/slippery. I've dropped them enough times, it's surprising how long it took me to adopt this tip for myself. 3. The above goes for the Zombie. Have one for practice (it'll get all dented up). 4. When practicing your coin sleights in front of the bathroom mirror, PUT THE LID DOWN. You'll end up "fishing" if you don't. Not good. 5. If you are an I.T. worker, have a backup system, even a cheap I.T.R. will save face. I can't count how many times breakage has occured and I have to hem and haw my way out...backup, backup backup! Did I mention having a backup system? 6. Remember the saying, "When in Doubt, Leave It Out!" If you haven't practiced enough to be 100% confident in your trick, don't show it. My saying goes, "Vanish No Dime, Before It's Time..." If you don't follow this advise, your audience may just laugh at you and walk away... OK, enough...just my $.02... Doug |

Don't try to talk while you have a coin in your mouth. Actually, better advice would be to never put a coin in your mouth but this is magic and we do strange things.
Anyway, I ended up accidentally swallowing a half dollar. Had to go to the emergency room too because I felt it was stuck in my chest area. After they took some X-rays I was waiting in the lounge. Some guy came up and asked if I had any change. (True story) Ron Jaxon |

Oh man, have I fished some magic out of the porcelain portal before! Mostly doing tricky card sleights in front of the mirror. Good to know I'm not the only one!

Two 1) Always double check ur doves wing and tail trim when working resturants, neither patrons nor owners like feathers or dove poop in their meals 2) never do a well rehearsed comedy routine with a second magician who thinks he is a great ad libber.

Never carry your invisible deck in an old box that breaks when you try to take it out of your pocket.
Kids DO NOT like the ambitious cards. Never drop the coin bite gimmick on the floor of your house. Ha..... |

Another one just came to mind.
Be very careful when doing the card on ceiling. Let me share just a few examples of things that have gone wrong when doing this trick. Some of these things happened to me while others have happened to magicians friends of mine. One time at a magic convention a few of us started talking about this trick and most of us had our embarrassing moments to share while doing it. One time I did the card on ceiling and the deck put a hole in the ceiling tile. I had no idea it was made out of Styrofoam. Another time I did it and the entire deck stayed up there. The rubber band was too tight. A friend of mine accidentally vanished a deck of cards. When the deck hit the ceiling the tile lifted up. The deck went above then the tile fell back down into place. So the deck ended up above the ceiling tiles. But the selected card was still on the ceiling (Lucky). Another friend told me about the time that another card stuck to the signed selection (Air pressure or maybe moisture). So there's where actually two cards stuck together on the ceiling and the signed one was hidden. This one turned out to be a great trick though because as the spectators told the magician that it was the wrong card on the ceiling. The magician saw the extra card fall to the floor. So he asked the spectator what the right card was. They told him. he snapped his fingers and pointed back up to the ceiling. The spectators are amazed because to them he magically changed it into the right card. One more that happened to me. I tossed the deck up. The card stuck to the ceiling and the deck fell back down. Well it fell a little ways but it landed on the blade of a ceiling fan and stayed there.. Ron Jaxon |

When you palm a coin all day for practice, be extra careful around escalators.
Never forget you have a coin palmed, especially on a date. Two hours into the evening it can be ackward to explain. In juggling, I do a classic trick called the kangaroo. Basically in the midst of juggling, you throw one ball higher than the others, pull out the bottom edge of your shirt forming a trampoline, and bounce the ball off your shirt back into the pattern. One performance I was wearing a new button-down shirt, and when I got to the kangaroo, the ball disappeared. I was more surprised than anyone! Turns out it had slipped between two of the buttons and was sitting inside my shirt. Always practice before performing in a new costume! |

With coins, not only should you keep the lid down, but close the drain in the sink! I've never had anything fall in the toilet, but have come close to losing things down the sink.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I've got another one that happened to me just today. If your doing sponge balls, make sure your assistant doesn't open his/her hand in the middle of the effect. My whole class looked as my assistant dropped out the extra sponge balls I sneaked into his hand.
