Aaron,
There are many different things that influence our magic and the way we present. Aside from magic, what areas in your life do you take influence from. So people tend to take from "pop" culture, others from music, and yet others from reading classics. Where or what do you model yourself(even the slightest) after? Thank you for your time. Corey B. |

Corey,
Wow. This stuff is starting to get good. In order to be an artist of any kind, a person must live life. I take inspiration from Plays, Movies, Music and the rest of the arts. I love storytelling and all its forms. Having studied so many forms of storytelling, I decided years ago not to learn very much, academically, about music. For my money, there is very little that can beat the social, physical and spiritual kick of a righteous rock concert. I take almost all my pacing lessons from live rock and roll shows. I want my magic show to feel THAT way. I want to deliver the rush. The party. If you can do that, people will have a gooooood time. That's what I want them to have. What artists and art forms encourage you in your magic? Other than magicians. Get serious.. maybe discover an answer to this question you haven't even thought of...I will if you will.... |

As for my inspiration, it comes from music, movies, comercials, and even listening to other people just talk.
A great artist by the name of Jim Brickman composes some really incredible music. You can put the headphones on, close your eyes and actually see the story he is telling with his piano. His music can inspire me to be romantic with my magic as well as very "flashy". For me, people are great sources of inspiration. I listen to their thoughts and ideas on life or whatever they happen to be talking about at that time and work on making those thoughts and ideas come true. I tell their story all over again using a magic. Inspiration is everywhere. If your having trouble finding inspiration it is because you are looking for it. You don't find inspiration, it finds you - at least thats true for me. Brian |

I dont know if this is exactly what you guys are getting at but this sort of fits in.
There have been a number of things outside of the magic world that have had an impact on my magic. Miles Davis has a wonderful album called "Kind of Blue" I worked out a good amount of my ambitious card routine with this album. I would just sit out side and listen to the first few tracks then I would improvise using ambitious card sequences. This helped me find the right rhythm and feel to the routine that I want. Also a few years ago I worked on a play called "The Lottery" we learned a lot about scripting ( we wrote a play using issues brought up in the lottery) and character work. This encouraged me to script much of my material and do some character work. I know this isn't exactly what you meant. Noah Levine |

Noah,
I'm pretty sure it's exactly what I meant to the letter. Miles Davis.....not bad kiddo! Aaron (ex theatre major) |

thanks, Ex theatre major interesting. I can see it now THE PAPER ENGINE live on broadway. Seriously one of the things I like about the book is that you bring up issues surrounding performance not from magic books but from your time working on theatre. A question do you feel that when you are going for the feeling you get from a great rock song you are thinking more about your perfomrance or the tricks you are doing.I think what has helped me be inspired by music is that I have been thinking more about what it does for my performance not the tricks I am doing.

Oh yeah, Noah. I'm not so much talking about the material, as how it's paced, and what goes where. I use rock and roll to help me lay the show out, so that it builds properly, and leads to the right finale.

I spent a decade managing movie theaters so that's not too surprising I guess. I also take inspiration for a couple of scripts from magic history itself. I enjoy songs about performing music (like "Walk of Life" or "Piano Man" for example) and so I guess that's where that comes from. Often I'll find a "hook" that sticks with me and makes we want to write a script around it. The line "Do you wanna see something REALLY scary?" from "Twilight Zone, the movie" did. It took me a couple of years to find a trick to fit that opening line. For the past decade I've been mulling over a line from Paul Simon's Graceland album. I know that a beautiful effect can be formed around a line from "Under African Skies" but other than having a basic idea of what the trick should be about I haven't made any progress. I know it should be about genetic memory, Carl Jung and the collective unconscious. And I know what it is I want us to remember. Now I just need the trick. "This is story of how we begin to remember." |

Joseph Cambell's work is required for the would be dream spinner. I read it, and gained so much, I can only hope others to the same. Your mention of Jung made me feel it was relevant........Start with "Power of Myth" with Bill Moyer, and then go to "Hero of a Thousand Faces" if you get that far, you don't need me to tell you where to go next.

Aaron,
A great story teller with unique presentation, inspired phrasing, and brilliant pacing is the poet Shel Silverstein. As for inspiration, my fuel came from a different place within. As a musician and song writer I developed the ability to have sounds and words flow from me like an emotion, as natural as breathing. It took years of study, failure, and doubt before I found even the slightest hint that magic could do the same through me. My inspiration is to find that same ability that I have with music. It is not, yet, as complete and posessing as music can be, but I have found the place where that resides. Tom |

Tom,
Good post. I to am A Silverstein fan, being raised on his children's material. I even do a trick based on his work...... Best, Aaron |
