Hi Nedo. Welcome to the Café.
You didn't say specifically what simple tricks you now do, but assuming they are able to be performed in a close-up environment, why not just carry a few tricks with you to a party or whatever other gathering you are at with your friends, and look for an opportunity to show them something. However, it is very important to have your tricks well practiced before attempting to perform them. But friends and family are a good place to start. Good luck Steve |

Nedo,
Try to make your friends ask you to do some magic. Ask them what their hobby is -- that way they are forced to ask you what your hobby is. When you tell them you're a magician, guess what they'll ask you The whole point of this is to make them ask. When *they* ask you, they want you to succeed. They want to believe you are the magician. Don't force them. Make them ask. And then -- amaze them. |

They all ask.....I can do very little though....I have purchased so far 3 fully extensive books that teach you step by step....I'm working on sleight of the hand and the easy stuff right now.....Well, I dont really know what easy is to you guys....sorry.

Nedo, there are some good sources of effects at levels of beginner and beyond. I would try to stick to sources that get you started with the classics. Stars of Magic is a good book to start with. I am sure the other folks will have some good recommendations.
As far as a link for purchacing tricks, books, videos, etc., try Hank Lee's Magic Factory or Discount Magic. I'm not sure what the actual www.(link) is right now. Steve |

Nedo,
You can find Hank Lee at http://www.hanklee.net/ Take my advice (I am also just getting started): Spend your money on books! Instead of buying the latest super-reputation-making-trick or video, get some general magic books, for example the Tarbell series. They will give you a lot of good tricks and, more importantly, a broad understanding of the art of magic and the principles behind good magic. |

Nedo,
Do, indeed, take the advice of PhranQ, above. Among the books for a beginner, I would recommend: Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic; Tarbell, all eight volumes; Bobo's Modern Coin Magic; Royal Road to Card Magic. Those will give you a truly solid grounding in magic, plus enough easy stuff that you can start in right away. Also -- and this is very important -- check your local library; there are often undiscovered pearls there; and don't forget to check out the young people's section, too. (I'm a bit partial to libraries; that's where I learned a lot of magic -- about 50 years ago, now!) |

Most people will recommend Bobo's if you want to learn about coins, and Royal Road for cards.
I agree, don't start off with gaffed tricks.

If you are doing basic stuff, and are interested in cards I always like to recommend the Card College series.
Excellent way to being moving up in the world of cards.

I remember getting started. I was buying every cool looking deck and packet trick I could get my hands on. Then I was given the same advice. Start with something that will help you out for the long haul. My first book was The Amature Magician's Handbook by Henry Hay. Gives a great overview of a little in every field, though some of the material does appear quite dated. Mark Wilson's book is excellent. Also, if you're so inclined, and have the opportunity, get some videos. Micheal Ammar's tapes are great for learning, though you can find just about anything you want out there.

Yet, somehow I always forget to mention it to people starting out in magic. Its a great book and well worth studying. Thanks for the reminder, Richard Green
