Hi everyone!
I thought I'd post this here since this is one of the most buissy places in the Cafè, and I really need some advice: I'm co-hosting a meeting for all the local magicians in the capital, it's happening in the end of August and I'm looking to put a "theme" around the meeting. There are going to be many senior-magigians there so I thought I'd might show them some of the new names and styles of magic, but I'm not sure how popular it will be...? Any one got some advice on ANY theme they might think of, they will all be greatly appreciated.. -e-
...As long as i`m not a world-champion at anything, the great reactions of doin` magic will do just fine.....

How about something like The Development of Personal Style. You could develop the theory first and then use some of the senior magicians as examples of diverse local styles. You could then point out the new styles of various other well-known magicians - tying it all back to the theoretical construct you first presented.
Alternatively, you might want to discuss various theoretical approaches to routining a show. Again, you could use the senior and other well-known magicians as examples to illustrate the theory. Just a thought. Kent

I'd ask each person you are inviting to
write three things they would fine interesting to learn and talk about. Take the top one of the all them and use that as the theme. that's how medical symposium's pick their topics.

Eirik,
My theme for "senior" magicians would be how magic keeps us young. In body, mind and spirit. No one is ever too old to do magic. It keeps us moving physically, we must use our minds to put it all together and to perform and it keeps us with people, the best medicine for the spirit. Have fun, David
You have to give it away to keep it.

Thanks for the feed-back guys, I really like the ideas posted!!
I guess the Norwegian Magic Cirkle is no different from othere around the world, it spans from the youngest member who is 12 years old to the oldest who is about 82. And I don't think they have much more in common than magic.. There are so many fields in the art, and what a senior, well-experienced magician may like will not interest a new magician, but I'd like to get a way for the older crew to teach their skills and experience to the younger gouys just to see how the "partnership" might turn out, any ideas how this could be accomplished? -e-

How about "Magic: Bridging the Gap".
This could be about how magic is universal and closes the generation gap, crosses language barriers, etc. "The Magic Tree" whose branches reach out and touch people of all ages, culture and nations. |

"Magic- this was then and this is now." -magic through the ages? I like the idea you originally came up with. It would be neat if you also had a table with magic magazines from the early 1900s or MUM magazines from the earlier part of the century. I know I have a bunch. Perhaps you could hang up old headshot photos from fellow local magicians/ or recognized greats- if someone ever kept a record or anything like they do with our club. We keep an entire scrapbook. Hopefully everything goes ok.

This is what came to mind as I read. If you can get lots of pictures, poster and possibly even antique props in there. I'm sure they'll catch the attention of the younger members and the senior members will likely be able to tell the younger ones a little about them. Maybe they'll even have some personal experiences with that magician in the picture or the prop they're discussing. I could just see them discussing a picture or some of the recently lost legends such as Karral Fox, Jay Marshall, Blackstone, Little Johnny Paul and so forth.
Just a thought. Ron Jaxon |

Hello Eirik
One exercise that I have used at some of our IBM Ring 333 (The Fox Ring) meetings was titled Grab Bag. The exercise consisted of the junior magicians bringing paper bags with miscellaneous item in them for the senior magicians to work with and the senior magicians brought bags for the junior magicians. You could not look in the bag before choosing. You had to choose one bag and perform a routine with the items in the bag. This exercise not only brought laughs to the group (because of some of the ODD items people included) but also brought the club closer together. Everyone who brought a bag in had their own ideas as to what should be done with the contents, but they were usually surprised. A seniors idea for the props was almost always different than that of the juniors ideas. The only rules were: Only one out of every four items in each bag could be an actual magic prop. The other items had to be household items. You could not collaborate with any other magicians about what to put in the bags, you could receive no help prior to the performance, and you didn’t have to use all of the items in the bag but you had to use only the items in the bag. We were looking for creativity. I was very pleased, at the end of the exercise, when the group sat at the tables exchanging ideas with no noticeable age barrier visible. If you are interested in additional ideas please PM me. Because of this and other exercises our club has turned into a family. We still have disagreements but what family doesn’t. Take care and take cards Antony Gerard PS: I'm originally from the Netherlands but have now lived in the U.S.A. for most of my life. I have been to Oslo a few times but sadly the last time was in the mid 1970s. I was working my way through Europa doing busking and worked in Oslo, Tromso, and Trondheim (sorry if I got the spelling wrong). When I tell people here about the friendliness of the Norwegian people they seldom believe me. You have a beautiful country and people to match. Thank you for your past hospitality. At a few of the past FFFF conventions I spoke with and performed a lot of my magic for Piet Forton. He even bought some of my magic creations. During one of our conversations I brought up the fact that I was asked to do some lectures in Europa next year. We discussed possibly doing some in Norway also. I hope to be doing some lectures in your county as well and hope to meet you than. |
