I have searched all over the internet to find a performance of this flourish and for others as well, like the butterfly cut! Unfortunately, I didn't find anything but Jeff McBride's videos! I would LOVE to buy his vol 3 video but first I just wanna see what it looks like! Apparently, those two flourishes (curly-q and butterfly) are AMAZING and since I'm a BIG fan of flourishes, I want to ask if anyone has a clip of one of those 2 flourishes?
Thanks in advance!

David Blaine does the curley q move on his first special, perhaps you can track down a copy of that?
I have the McBride tapes & they are excellent |

aby9plp,
If you are seriously considering purchasing the set, I'd suggest you just go for it. From what I've seen and heard, this is one of the most uniformly praised magic video series available. I bought the DVDs and I've had absolutely no regrets. I don't know of any place you can see the moves online, but to give you a general idea of what they are: the butterfly cut is a two-handed, four packet cut and the curly-q move is a one-handed double fan in which the fans (they appear as one) "spring" open around the thumb from dealers' grip. Both are credited to Paul Harris. I can't execute the curly-q move yet, but people's eyes bug out when they see the butterfly cut. It's not exceptionally difficult, but there's something about the coordinated, fluid motion that is really appealling. Volume three has both of these on it, but you'll probably want to buy all three anyway. |

I think Gregory Wilson also teaches the Butterfly on Card Stunts Video. I have been thinking of going back to it, and learning it.

Hhhmmmm.... Haven't posted here in a while. Nice to see they have a Flourish type forum up.
Oh, and there is a video of the butterfly cut on magic video depot. Don't know the link though. |

Okay newbies...curley-q move just requires practice. I like it a lot because it's a really good way for asking someone to pick a card. A double circular fan just spreads out.

Hey Brown,
You seem to be something of the resident expert on the spread (and curly-q), so let me ask you this. How vital is the role of the pinky in the spread (and subsequently the curly-q)? The reason I ask is because, I have the McBride videos, and have been practicing the move on and off, but I have a minor problem. In the video, McBride talks about how the last bend in the fingers should be inwards and not outward. I can't really make my pinky do that on my good hand because of a childhood accident (nearly had the pinky severed at that joint). Have also tried the spread with the other hand, but I think it would be some time before I could do it like that. I can almost get it with my good hand, but the pinky is a problem. Taking the pinky away seems to mess things up. So... Thanks for any help/tips, etc... Kallak |

You know, when I saw David Blaine do it on 20/20, it didn't even look like the cards were spreading in a double fan configuration. It looked like a single fan. Then, I think it was a medium to wide, if I recall and TV can hide anything.
My practice has thus far allowed me to more or less do a decent spread... but I need the other hand to catch it! Otherwise all will fall to the floor! |

The pinky doesn't do anything in this except balance from below. You really want to concentrate on the upper right corner. Put pressure, a lot, with your 2nd, 3rd and 4th finger and thumb is a pivot point.
I hope that helps.

Yeah... Really a very hard move... I have to glue the card together or else I would have back problems from catching the cards on the floor everytime

I agree the pinky does nothing. It's a feel thing but a lot of pressure needs to be put with the other fingers but it is important that the cards aren't trapped under the fleshy part of the thumb as they need to release

It's on page 105 of Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment series. Book 1. Like the LePaul move, you'll ruin a ton of decks and drop tons of cards while learning it but it is a beautiful move.

Took me about a month but I eventually got the nack. It's one of those things were you keep trying and trying and eventually one day something clicks lol. Now I can't spread the cards without doing it
