The Magic Menu volumes by Jim Sisti are good. There's enough information and routines to last a liftime.

I actualy posted this before and it makes sense to me. When you step into the corporate world, most of us are quite unprepared for what happens. They are better at business than we are, which is what makes it such a tough market for us to crack.
Learn how to sell. Type in XEROX-PSS into a search engine. I believe this is right. It is their FEATURES AND BENIFITS selling course. This information is worth a thousand times what you will pay for it, and it is expensive. Don't let the cost deter you. If you have no idea how to act in this world, you will be lost. When you to to Africa and go on a safari the most important thing they tell you is not to leave the saftey of the jeep. Once you do and you step into the lions world you become something else entirley to the lion.....MEAT! Venturing into the corporate world where they negotiate million dollar deals, without training is leaving the saftey of the jeep. It's up to you, but I suggest a few less tricks and more study of selling. This will help you eat a lot better in the long run. Good Luck Danny

One book that helped me out tremendously with restaurant magic is called "Blood, Sweat, and Pinky Breaks" by Magnus.
Kirk Charles book is pretty good, but I found that he just listed methods that people use or used to get restaurant work. He really doesn't say this way works, or this is a better way than that. The Magnus book tells exactly what he did to get restaurant work. It's really cook when a professional will tell you how they got work and the steps they took... what worked and what didn't. Eugene Burger's "The Secret of Restaurant Magic" is awesome. It really opens your eyes as to what to expect in the restaurant environment... It's not always having fun and doing tricks... you have to know why you're there and what your job is. Danny, After 7 years of focusing on the children's market I decided to make my move into the corporate market. Your post was well received in that it motivates me to be a little better prepared when dealing with these companies. Thanks! |

His book is simply the guidance springing from a compilation of the search results. Performers such as Eugene Berger, Richard Webster, Simon Lovell, and Jim Sisti have all contributed to the survey that resulted in this book. The survey itself is set out as an appendix. As such, the book is much more than one person's experience. Kent

Hi magicman,
You kind of reinforced my point with your post. Don't get me wrong... Kirk Charles' book is a good book for methods of approaching restaurants and getting work. I've found that no one way works for EVERYONE. I could write all day about what other people do to get work. But if I wrote about what I did...what worked, what didn't... I'd write that with much more knowledge and passion (because I've experienced it and have felt the successes and failures). The Magnus book does just that. As such, there are pros and cons to both books... It just seems what one of us perceive to be the cons are the pros to the other. |

I agree with TheFish!
R Paul Wilson is a genius with magic and his restaurant act DVD is very good. It includes a lot of good ideas especially for tight working areas.
Look deep within yourself for inspiration
