Hello Mr. Osterlind. Big fan of your work. I had a quick question about your routine Two Cards in Pocket, which I believe is your version of Chan Canastas routine. You have a cool physcological force (may not be the right term) to get the spectator to choose the first card you name in his or her right pocket. You briefly touched upon this in your dvd, and I was wondering if you had any further tips. I think this is more or less what makes the routine so powerful. I know Canasta has a thing where they have 7 seconds to change their mind, and if he doesn't hit, he says something like...well some people wonder what happens if in those seven seconds, they had changed their mind. So I was wondering if you had any tips or suggestions. Thanks a lot. Take care.

Ben,
After the cards are pocketed, I say, "There is no way I or anyone else could possibly know what cards you have in your pockets. You mixed up the cards, chose them yourself and didn't look at them. I don't try to explain how I do this, but I believe the cards are ... The 4 of diamonds and ... the Qeen of Spades. Yes, the 4 of diamonds and the queen of spades. Which one do you want to be in what pocket?" What I do is to hesitate before naming the 4 the first time. Then, after I do, I name the second card but with a little less empahsis. Then when I repeat both cards I do it rather quickly. I believe this procedure "sets" the first card named a little more firmly in their mind. This then tends to be the first one named and that is usually in the right pocket as most people are right handed and as that is the first card chosen. A lot of this kind of work is individual and you really have to find what works best for you after a lot of trial and error. But I'm sure even Chan Canasta went through such a break in process. We just don't hear about that! OH, I have to point this out. I was recently out in Vegas with Criss Angel and Johnny Thompson. Johnny told me how he watched Chan night after night doing the effect wondering what he would say if he got it wrong. When He finally did, it was almost the exact out that I came up with. Again, for me, that out is, "See! That's why you shouldn't play Blackjack!" Richard |
