One routine I have done involves the dove pan, and dressing 3 children up as the wise men (balloon hats). I explain that the Bible doesn't actually tell us there were 3, but I use 3 for my example.
I read the passage, and produce "gold, incense, and mhyrr" from the dove pan. Gold bead chain, empty purfume atomizer bottle, and a plastic leafy plant (loosely resembles mhyrr). I talk about the symbolism of the 3 gifts. Gold for a king, incense for a diety, and mhyrr for someone who was going to die (Jesus' sacrifice). Jesus was both king (man) and God, and he was born to die as a sacrifice for our sins. I also display a silk of the wise men following the star, and get the children to hold it at the start. I had the silk made by a local artist for my needs. That's just one routine from our gospel Christmas show. There are several gospel routines in Duane Laflin's book on Christmas Magic, including a matching-card-style one with the words "Peace, Love, Joy to All" that you count through and match cards up with. The routine is called "Harmony". It has a nice message. In Duane's original suggestion, he had Christmas trees on the cards, but I use drawings of different coloured Christmas bells. I made my first set of these cards from cardboard, but then later had a professional sign maker make my sets from sintra (plastic sign making materials) and vinyl lettering. It looks fantastic. Duane Laflin has also sold some silks at one time or another with the drawing of baby Jesus in the creche, and he had some routines with those silks published in one of his books. Doc Haley gospel magic also has a couple of pre-made gospel Christmas routines, as well. Just a few tips to get you started. - Donald

I have used the Chinese Sticks to illustrate how throughout time God has tried to get our attention. God moves here, and we move there... etc, etc.
Ending with that God finally had to come as Jesus. More to the routine than that, but that is the concept. |

I had an idea about a silk TT routine where you introduce a white silk (representing Jesus) as you quote some of the verses from John chapter 1. Your showing both hands empty, not flashing the tip obviously, and as you quote how the word became flesh and dwelt among us your pulling the white silk out of your "empty" hand. Then produce a red and black silk which are reprentative of the sins of man and the blood of Jesus as payment for our sins.
I mention, as I drape the white silk over a cupped hand, how Jesus had a mission and that he laid down his life and took on the sins of the world (as I am placing the black silk into the white center but into the tip. Once the black silk is loaded and stolen I cover the white one still in my hand (supposedly with the black silk still inside there) with the red and explain how Jesus' blood covers our sin and washes us clean. I also mention just as I am about to pull the red one off, how when we ask Jesus into our hearts and to forgive our sins that God not only forgives us but promises to not even remember them any more. Pulling the red one off, displaying the white one now and then slowly opening my closed hand revealing he black silk to be completely gone. I am still working on this and trying to get the timing of the initial John passages to blend well but I did this when I was in China and it was awesome. I admit I have not read Duane Laflins book, have seen him lecture at FCM, but I don't know if this is a routine someone else has already worked out. I suppose it is although maybe it is a little different? What do you guys think? GlenD

How about you tell about the meanings of the symbols of Christmas - wreath, tree, lights on the tree, colors, gifts, etc. using miniature examples and do magical sleights and transformations with them as you talk.
One of my all time favorite Christmas pieces is written by Jeff Smith, the Frugal Gourmet. He was a Methodist Minister and put truly wonderful messages in his shows and books. There is one in his Christmas Cookbook called "The Problem with Christmas" that is truly wonderful that I could see transformed into a inspiring and powerful routine.

(Maybe with the exception of David Kaye's material, which is not just about secular Christmas, but is also about Hanukkah, too.) Not that there is anything wrong with that, I do both types of shows. But I thought we were discussing gospel Christmas magic. If we want to discuss secular Christmas magic, then I have lots to share on that subject, too. I just thought people should be aware, in case they buy this DVD set thinking it will be packed with gospel Christmas magic ideas & routines. - Donald P.S. I haven't seen this set. I am just going by the description on the KidAbra website.

All I am bringing up is this is presentations of Christmas themed props. You can make the Gospel presentation easily from this. Most illusions used in Gospel are secular props, and we make our Goepel presentation off it.

Any production box to produce candy, gifts, prizes, etc., but the final is the "greatest gift", Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World. You could use a silk, a cross, or any appropriate object to represent Jesus. I sometimes produce a nativity set one piece at a time (along with the candy, silks, etc and finish with the baby Jesus. This is designed for kid's shows, but it plays well with adults.

I heard Duane Laflin lecture in summer 2017 and he's a great teacher. Comes up with some wonderful ideas using "common" magic such as sponges, boxes, etc. Highly recommend his PDF download on Christmas magic. He'll stir your imagination regarding the Stratosphere, Professor's Nightmare and other effects. Really good stuff and very inexpensive.

An Idea; --a "Great Gift to receive / to Give" -- using the 'compass/arrow card' effect. 1. poster board cut to 14 x 28 (or?). 2. fold in half, making a 14 x 14 card- (with a message inside). 3. decorate outside like a 'gift' with ribbon shaped like '>'-or- streight with BOW at the (arrows)point end - careful , making sure BOW shows 'same'right'left'up'down.-you know what I mesn!! - 4. COMMENT while turning the Gift' - "No matter which way" - "A Great Gift to give and /or receive - is"-- open/unfold - "FORGIVENESS" Happy Holdays - Blessings- Ralph(russo)Rousseau

I am going to do a Christmas magic show in a couple weeks. I can't recall the origin of these, but these are some of the routines in my set:
A giant appearing candy cane from a Christmas change bag sock and the candy cane will be "The North Pole". A gag with cards that have "R", "U", a red "E", etc., and they then turn into a banner that reads Christmas! An effect with a psychic puppet monkey and a gift selected at random from 50 cards with pictures on them. Santa, Skunk, and the Magic Chimney by Tommy James. A hippity hop rabbit style effect, but with a Christmas theme. Think about how you could modify some of your existing routines to have a Christmas theme. I do the psychic monkey without a Christmas theme, where he doea a card trick. Modified for Christmas, he predicts the contents of a gift. KJ |

Would the psychic monkey be Chico, the amazing mind reading monkey by Bill Abbot? There is a good routine for using just one hippity hop rabbit in, "Magic with a Christmas Theme" eBook by Marc Dibowski, which comes with photo's to modify one of your hippity hop rabbits. The ebook has some really good idea's. Highly recommend it.
Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.

I don't own Chico, and I'm not sure what he does. I do love Bill Abbott's stuff, though. I have different routines for the Monkey. In the Christmas routine, it's about a bunch of cards that have different drawings of animals, words, toys, etc. the card that the kid selects matches the gift that is in the box.
As for the hippity hop rabbit, the routine that I do was inspired by a video on Christmas Magic by Tony Chris. I really like the DVD The original was about a red and green candy cane and the green candy cane turns into a green Christmas tree. My routine is basically the same, but it has a Mexican theme with a red and green piñata that turns into a Christmas tree. The routine is partly educational. I grew up in Latin America, and the Pinata was originally a Christmas tradition were the beating of the piñata was about getting rid of sins and the candy pouring out signified the blessings of God. My set is a combination of just Christmas fun, with just a touch of gospel. I second your liking of Dibowski's ebook. KJ |
