Sticky topic. I knew a fellow who did a 6 bill repeat. I heard he was mad because another fellow was doing it. Now, you and I both know he didn't invent the 6 bill repeat. Hell, I don't think Mark Wilson invented it. What I didn't know, was that he was actualy mad becuase the other fellow was using the clever (and I thought it was pretty clever) story he had created for it. Now, depending on what part of this tale you are at, at any given time, any and all of the included actions were ethical, and unethical. It gets pretty complicated.

I hate people who do not give magic the respect it deserves.

Hating people is as bad as stealing! Hate the thing they do not the people.

Agreed, and if you find them "stealing" simply let the wolves know about it.

What is wrong with viewing the demo over and over again?

It is hurting a lot of people. It is hurting the business of magic sales. If you want a loaf of bread, is it not wrong to simply take it?
It is hurting the audience, this is no way to enter, or exist within the field of magic. Learning effects without support of the magic community creates bad magicians 9 times out of 10. If your associates think they are different, they are very mistaken. Learning what you are missing by learning only effects, without the support of the magic community is one of those things you can only understand by recieving that support. If someone learns an effect, then performs it, and has nothing but the effect to back that up. Magic is a whole lot more than "tricks", but it is hard for a non magician to understand and apreciate that. That's why we have the rules we have about exposure. Not because magicians are greedy meglomaniacs. Your friends should be learning and practicing the basics, not the hot shot stuff. The high dollar "trick" of the day will prevent you from developing far more important skills. You need to get the classics down pat, before you venture into the high end stuff, if you ever venture there at all. I don't. Never needed it, and I perform quite succesfully and profesionaly. If they realy want to be great magicians, then tell them to buy copies of "Mark Wilson's course in magic" and learn it cover to cover. Entertain people with the stuff in that book and they will be real magicians, instead of wanabes. |

They're just dissecting the tricks on the tape so they can learn them. Trying to explain ethics to them is pointless; after all, they have the technology to replay these tapes and they want to learn the tricks, so why shouldn't they use the technology? Maybe the answer isn't in explaining the ethics of magic, but in explaining magic. Magic is not about doing cool tricks and being the coolest dude on the ranch: it's about creating an illusion. That's the difference between a magician and a trick-doer. If we watch David Blaine carefully (and detached from "thinking like a magician"), we will realize he does create an illusion for the general public. If he were just doing cool tricks, he would be nowhere. I'm guessing these kids will give up doing tricks when they find something else cool to do.

Better to explain the basics to them.
Let them know that magic is just an aspect of theater and magicians are actors playing the part in shows offered as entertainment. And the "secrets" are just trivial tricks so our shows can delight our audiences. We act "as if" so they can enjoy stories where "it is".
