I rely on it if I renovate one of my routines and add a new effect I just learned. I may personally like that effect, but what a magician likes and what the spectators like are two completely different things. So if they don't like my change then I'll use it as a back up. But you can practice a effect so they go perfectly but that doesn't mean the specs will like it. In the odd chance they find everything in the routine only par then I'd use it. If a change in the rountine doesn't work out then I'd use it. I don't have it in any of my routines but I have ways to lead into from all of my card routines just in case.

I don't think the magic community has much to worry about w/ exposure through kids magic sets. It makes me think of all the times my daughters and wife have been exposed to my methods out of context ( thumbtips laying around, or in my case) Dbl backed cards, S**ll coins, etc.) but when they see me use the same items in a performance they are unaware that they are in play.
I have been fooled numerous times by methods I learned long before and then forgot. Magic will survive no matter what through new innovation and proper handling of the older methods.... my 2 1/2 cents

Come now, how many of us were first exposed to magic through over-exposed, mass-marketed items.
I first saw the Svengali deck from some dude on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. How about all the Adams items that became ou first tricks, cups and balls, color vision box, ball and vase. One never knows what will ignite the spark! |

The mental photography deck suffered the same fate in the UK years ago. The day Toys-r-us stocks self levitation "tricks" is the day I go 'wibble' and leave to live a life as a hermit on a distant mountain.

I've only just seen this thread and would like to put a few facts in for the record.
1. While I wrote the instruction booklet (with additional ideas from Wesley James, Billy McComb, Silly Billy, Randy Wakeman, John Graham and others) I am certainly not the one behind all this. It is the product of the Fantasma Magic Company. 2. Fantasma is not in the business of exposing magic but in creating new magicians. The product is suitably priced to put off the 'just interested in knowing how it works' guys. Many of us bought magic from magic shops when we were younger. Surely you aren't suggesting that we close them all down? Many big name magic dealers have street level store fronts where you can buy anything from a thumb tip to a zig zag. I don't think that this harms magic at all as, as others have said, magic is not about the prop it is about the performer! 3. The handkerchief does not make a noise. It is the brainchild of Angelo Carbone and is a very clever intro to an invisible deck routine. It was a complete sell out at the last FISM where many pros just loved it. Just my ten cents worth! I've bought Fantasma magic sets for my neices at the dollar store. They also have stripper and sven decks. The girls are a bit to young for card handling, but the sets are not bad. They are fine for beginners that are intrested in magic. They have some nice tricks, nothing heavy, just simple things that help kids learn some of the basic principles of magic. I don't think it's killing anything.
I took the ball vase from one of the kits and kept it for myself!! It's a little tiny ball vase. I like it alot!!

I am having a worries about this invisible deck being selling on the high street.
I have sometimes a kids knowing the vanishing silk. The last thing I is needing is for kids now knowing the invisible deck. Maybe I am starting to sell some others and be making some monies from everyone. I can be making some tricks like a chop cup or maybe a elastic pull. Maybe I am selling some secrets of holding breaths under water because of David Blaine. Ha ha.
Think not what magic can do for you, but what you can do for magic.

I have to admit, I am just the tiniest bit squeemish about the ID. But the fact of the matter is that they sell the ID in vending machines in Las Vegas. You can't keep it for yourself, it's already out there. I think a lot of people want to buy a trick, learn it, and then wave their "magic wand" and make it so that noone else can ever buy the effect. It dosen't work that way. The best thing to do is try to expand from the most widely used presentations and attempt to do something different with the deck. But really, the ID is still gonna fool 99.999 percent of laymen. It's not nearly as exposed as some of the other classics.
Look, we're coming up on the four year Anniversary of the original post. There have been many decks sold, and many people fooled in those four years I'll bet. It's not dead.

As long as there is money to be made, the will be people of questionable scruples who will succumb to temptation and will rationalize their decision to salve their conscience.
TT and ID should never be exposed on the entry level. Yes, there are ways to get around casual knowledge if you perform at a professional level, but none the less, the art is weakened. Not killed, but weakened. If you are OK with that, then that is up to you, but it is not OK with me. Magic deserves the respect of its practioners. There are many ways to spark an interest in magic in beginners, these items are not the way. |

Just for the record. None of the Fantasma sets that I got had either a TT or an ID. These truly were beginner sets. I don't think TT's should be in beginners magic sets. Nor cards.
No I'm not really OK with it, but I don't wail and gnash my teeth about it either. It's not new and it's not the end of magic. When would you say that the thumbtip became over exposed? When did thumb tips start popping up in magic sets? 5 years ago? 50 years ago? It's magic, it's being sold as magic. I believe that kids should have access to magic. I don't want to see everything thrown into beginners magic sets, but I don't mind when simple tricks are included. I wouldn't include a TT only because if they are intrested, and take only a tiny step further, they will discover the TT. It's not highly guarded, underground secret. It's a utility tool that every single magician is aware of. Do you feel that the art of magic was weakened, just a little bit, every time you personally gained some knowledge or learned a secret? Or is it only when others intrested in magic learn a secret that magic is weakened?

Geez guys.
I sell the invisible deck in my "Executive Kit" for business men and women who are interested in knowing a few high quality effects. I also do my routine with the invisible deck in my performance for these same executives. As far as they are concerned it's a completely different piece. Exposing a trick to an individual interested in performing or exposing a trick in it's historical context is not the same as exposure for the sake of exposure. It's always funny to me what we as magicians choose to think is important. "Nevermind that my Dove Pan is a crappy trick that is obvious to a five year old. Nevermind that my silks look like I live on a moth farm. Nevermind that my patter insults the intelligence of the dimmest spectator. Nevermind that my slip force is as loud as a gun shot. I have to worry about important things like how many people are buying the invisible deck or what Jonathan Pendragon is exposing at the Houdini museum." The masked magician exposed the linking rings, tt, mismade girl, and crystal casket, all of which I have performed in the last 3 months. They all still killed. Quit worrying. Start practicing. True Story: Two years ago, I did a frat show at the Alpha House of the famous Sigma Chi fraternity (yes the one they wrote the song "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" about). I did the Brainwave Deck (an ID with a kicker for those of you unfamiliar) and, as I started the routine, the guy that I had up front as the volunteer TIPPED THE METHOD TO THE ENTIRE GROUP because HE had bought it at Magic Masters at Navy Pier JUST SO HE COULD EXPOSE THE TRICK! And he admitted that he was going to do that to the guy behind the counter who still sold it to him!
If that's not exposure, I don't know what is! Now I've worked at or managed several magic shops during my career and never - and I mean NEVER have I done something like that. Even when I worked for marshall Brodien's shop at Old Chicago, we were always careful to "sell what's approrpiate to the customer" as Billy Bishop, the manager (and Café' member Glenn Bishop's father) would say. Just my tuppence worth. Lee Darrow, C.H.
