I was recently asked to do a stage show for my college that I am currently attending and I wanted to get some advice on where I should look in order to put something togethger. I have time, this show is in the far future. At the moment I am doing close up in order to get the fan base so my big number will turn out large numbers. However this is a side of magic that I haven't yet traveled and wanted some advice on where to start looking for building the illusions and perhaps some books on stage showmanship. Any advice would really help.

This a great sorce for building illusions http://hamiltonholtinc.site.yahoo.net/sofverbigbla.html as it has 118 plans your sure to find what you need, but seeing as your just starting out with stage 90.00 might be a little big of an investment. But hey stage is expensive and you want good reactions and for that you need good illusions.
also good luck with stage |

Most people don't just jump in and immediately start performing large stage shows. This tends to evolve over time. Most people start doing close up and parlor magic. Then they may develop a show with one or more illusionettes.
These are smaller scale illusions that still have the ability to play to a larger audience. The advantages with illusionettes are the lesser cost, the greater portability and the versatility of the effects. Getting comfortable with the illusionettes also helps greatly in developing your stage presence and showmanship skills for the larger scale illusions down the road. From everything you have indicated, I would tend to recommend a series of illusionettes with perhaps one large scale illusion to end the show. Just my two bits. Some illusionettes to consider may be: Head Twister Dagger Head Chest Chair Suspension Princess Flying Carpet Jumbo Square Circle Ultimate Dancing Hank Impossible Hank Animation Sensation You also may want to consider some manipulation effects such as: Miser's Dream Chinese Linking Rings Multiplying Balls Hope that helps. I did the same thing, I would recomment looking into grant applications IMMEDIATELY. the process of applying for and receiving a grant is a long one but well worth it if you stick to it. I know people that have put on an entire stage show and funded about $20k with money that was given to them via a grant.
Also talk to your school's theatre department about the performance aspect of it. There was once a three VHS series called get your act together that also gave some great advice on stage performance specifically for stage magicians. Figure out if your show is going to have a theme or not. Is there a central idea you want the show to revolve around? Or are you just going to be demonstrating your skill in different ways on stage? I started with the Randy Woodbury videos for basic illusion building. A stage show is a big deal. A big illusion show requires a lighting designer, light board operator, sound designer, sound board operator, stage manager, assistants on stage, grips backstage, etc, etc, etc... Don't take the time you have between now and then for granted and stay on top of everything. |

I have to add something as a retortion to what was earlier said, I have been performing for a long time. I do kid shows, parlour shows, and close up shows. This stage show is just another type of show that I am trying to put together, as I said before I have a lot of time to make this show and the big reason that I am doing it is because I have always been interested and my college would like me to do something for the university. I thank everyone here for the advice and links, I am sure that they all will help.
