I have been practising like a madman the last few months, and have learned quite a few sleights very well. I know some good tricks already, and I am learning one or two new ones every week.
My girlfriends mother will be visiting us from Paris, and she is really interested in seeing some tricks, but she only speaks French, and I don't. So I am wondering if you can recommend some good routines without patter and spoken instructions that I could show her? My DL is still weak, but most other basic sleights work fine for me. Under other circumstances I have no problems with patter and presentation, once I learn the mechanics of a trick, that is what I focus on. In the end it is the presentation that decides the strength of the trick, this is why I am asking. Having my girlfriend translate the instructions and patter will certainly ruin the performance, so I am looking for something very visual. Any suggestions or comments are very welcome! Which card routines do you perform for people when there is no common language? Michael |

Why do you think that translating instructions and patter will ruin the performance? There has been countless examples of magicians who cant speak a word of the main laguage spoken in a certin country succeeding with nothing but a translator - Hiro Sakai (I'm very sorry if I spelt his name wrong ..I've tried my best) Is a reknown mentalist in korea - he can't speak a word of korean and he gets his translator to do speaking for him - and he fries people everywhere - remember this is mentalism we are talkinga bout here.
As long as you are doing nothing but talking, I think that the trick should suffice with translation - even if you are performing bizarre magic. Magic should transcend language. Now, if you are just looking for visual card routine/ trick anyways, try some blank deck routine, colour changing deck routine, etc. I think though that Ambitious card should more than suffice as a "visual trick" If you really don't want her translating, then learn few phrases from her! Hope it goes well. |

Some effects which do typically have patter can have their timing adjusted to play smoothly with music or in silence. Some effects are clear even if patter in a language the audience doesn't understand is used - I've watched videos by Tamariz and Lavand and been greatly entertained =)
When MVD was up, a popular video author there called "twins" (Arnaud Chevrier... from France, incidentally) had several videos up that had only music - Invisible Palm Aces, a table and no-table version of the Restless Lady (an Ascanio effect, I believe). MVD is no longer up, but if you go to http://www.lsp-fr.com/lien_listevideos.p......mp;arc=0 and search on the page for "Par : Twins" you can find his videos. I especially recommend watching the two effects / three videos mentioned above, though of course these are performance videos, so you may have to do a little research or figure out a method on your own. There are, I believe, three versions of Invisible Palm Aces throughout Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment books. Not sure where the Restless Lady is taught, but I'd expect in an Ascanio book, called La Dama Inquieta. I just searched, and apparently it's in Vol 3 of the newer Ascanio books, but I think only Vol 1 has been translated into English so far. I have read Vol 1 and it's an incredible read, but I don't think the others are out in the States yet, so that may not be much help =/ Gary Ouellet liked to do magic to music, without patter, so I suspect that a lot of his books would have effects suitable to your needs. I agree about learning a few key French phrases, even if you don't intend to speak at all. A few choice words or phrases might help keep things clear without having to "rely" on a translator or saying it in English and hope for the best. "Pick a card", "say stop at any time", "it can't be done any slower than that"............ Whatever the situation calls for, of course, depending on what you're doing. At least if you know a few phrases you'll be prepared if you do need to explain or instruct a little. |

How about The Silent Treatment by Jon Allen? Uses written instruction on 'flash boards'. You could get your girlfriend to write them in French.

You could also do "A dream of aces" to music. Pretty much anything to music would be good.

Like MC Magi, I would think ACR would still do well with no patter.
For something non-DL, I would also think that Card Warp even without any patter would still be impressive, but maybe that's just me. It is so simple, but people really do seem to love it. For maximum effect, maybe just make sure before you do the push through the first time, that she realizes she is supposed to be watching for the card as it comes out the other end. A couple of points with the index finger of the free hand first, and she would probably get the idea. Hope this helps, MXray |

I agree with Gianni, Sam the Bell Hop is not the type of trick where you can be silent.

Ask your girlfriend to translate a patter for you. You'll be able to make a presentation in french in a few days. It will force you to think at the better, right-to-the-point, script. It will improve your presentation, even in dutch as you'll probably keep the script in dutch.
Of course, find other effects you can do silently. You could, say, produce the 4 aces in a magical way, do the Daley's last trick, and then use 2 aces to find a selected card in different ways. I think that should be clear enough without words. Jonathan. |

Just learn a few works like "choose a card sil vou plez," or "watch this." A lot of routines don't need patter, and it would be good practice for you to just use body language, pointing, your gaze, etc.

"Twisting the Aces" with an ace, two, three, and four instead of the four aces, showing them in order as if the cards are counting. Before performance, just spread the cards to show, clearly, four cards, then hold up one, two, three, then four fingers to get the counting idea across.
Just so you don't hurt your brain, the set-up from the top down is 2-A-4-3. I actually prefer this handling when performing in English, with the patter, "Ever been to Vegas? Have you heard of counting cards? THat's what these are; these are my counting cards..." Having said that, using aces is great to follow up with Vernon's Variant. Another advantage to the A-2-3-4 handling is that the spectators have no trouble keeping track of which cards have already flipped.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

A killer routine done silently is the Ambitious Card. The effect is so clean cut that it works well to music, etc. Also, as noted above, a good clean Triumph is also very workable.
Silent you are looking for effects that are as simple to understand as possible. With coins for instance, Spellbound is superb done to music especially if your routine has a good solid kicker for the Finale. Best,
