Good day,
A while ago, I ran across an excellent do as I do routine. The magi and the spectator would each have 5 or so cards and the spectator would then have a choice as wether to let the magician deal the card under the deck or lay it on the table. When it was said and done, all the cards matched up. I know it uses a principle that isn't used often. The spectatot would count his cards and the magician would count his, but he'd have to have them in reverse order. I'm looking for the name of this trick as I have forgotten it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Haas

You may and I stress the word "may" find such a routine in Encyclopedia of Card Tricks by Fredrick Braue. There is an entire chapter devoted to the Do As I Do plot.

If I understand what you explaines it is not a You do as I do but it uses something similar to the (I hope I have the name right) Gilbert principle. The trick has many names that I have come accross and I use it in my comedy show, will the cards match, will the jokes match and many more but I am not sure of where it originates from although if my memory serves me well it was originated by Larry Becker with ESP cards but I may be way off.
If you search "will the cards match" on the Caf?there are many threads about it I am just too lazy to do it now and post it here. |

Gilbreath principle.... This may be that... it seems like the stay stack principle to me at first glance though.

Now that I am reading this agian there are better effects with this principle once you understand how it works.
It requires nothing but creativity and set up. Enjoy it though. The trick you mentioned if performed nicely is a killer but it becomes really powerful when a spec can shuffle the cards and you can deal a certain poker hand or memorize the cards or they can deal a certain hand or whatever all due to this principle. mindblowing stuff. |

That effect found under the title of 'Will They Match' (mentioned earlier) and it can be found in the Art of Astonishment (vol 3,I think) It's done with business cards but the principal can be applied to cards.

Geez, I hate to always be bringing up Sankey, but the man seems to have a nice routine for just about everything. On his DVD "22 Blows to the Head" he has an effect with this basic premise called "Casulties of War". What's nice about it, is the spectator gets to randomly shuffle their half of the torn cards as much as they like. They, of course, are then shown to match.
