I had an idea for an effect this morning that is so simple and striaght forward that I'm certain someone else had to have already come up with this. And that's what I'm looking for, any name or credit of who might have originally devised this method. Here's the basic idea:
Deck is in Si Stebbens. Have spectator cut the deck and choose which stack they would like to use. (A basic eqivoque here ensures the magi ends up with the bottom stock) The spectator spots the top card on their deck and remembers it, and places it in pocket or on table. The magician selects a card from his pack and does the same The cars are shown to match. I've tried to remain vague to avoid blatant exposure. But I'm confident you can connect the dots here. I just know someone has to have come up with this before as the handling is so simple. Anyone know a source or does seem similar to something that's already in existence. Thanks for any info. |

Perhaps the magician should choose first - then by using the one ahead principle you could go through the entire deck (with both packets spread out) showing that the spectator has correctly matched the magician's choice in each case.

Actually Darwin Ortiz has an effect in his book "At The Card Table" called Do As I Did that is even more deceptive but very similar to the routine you described.

Well I was thinking of it with a sort of mentalism spin on it, as if I was devining their card. But I like your idea as well netguzzler (what a name!). I'll have to try it out both ways and see which version "sells the best"
It just occured to me as I was writing this, it might be interesting to have the spectator select their card and NOT look at it. That might make the reveal even stronger. Thanks Mark, I'll look into that! |

So doesn't Sankey!

I'm not sure I understand your response JSBloom. I'm aware of three "Do as I Do" variations that Sankey has devised. One uses Si Stebbens and an ID, one uses a DF, and one employs a marked card.

The idea is nice but seems you cannot end really clear with putting the card on table .

I think you have a good point tigerman, and I've been experimenting around with the presentation on this today. (I'm a high school teacher so I have lots of guinnea pigs throughout the day!) The first phase I've been doing the same. I've had the spectator cut the cards as often as they like to "mix them up", then cut them one final time into two piles, and forcing the bottom stock on them.
The second phase I've played a few ways. I explain that they will select a card and I will try and find that cards mate. (same color/value) I have them peek at "the card they cut to", table it, and cover it with their hand. I then gather up both stacks of cards, do a little mentalism acting, and look through the deck to find the cards match. I table this as my prediction. They turn over their card first. I recap how they mixed the cards and selected one at random first to build a little suspense. Then they turn over my prediction card to reveal the match. I tried it a few times w/o them looking at the card first, that was interesting. Then I tried it with two spectators each selecting a card. I had the first look at their selection while the second one did not. This seemed to play out the best and kind of had a nice little build up to it. Anyway, that's where I'm at with it right now. I'm under no false impressions that this is some devastating effect, just a little idea that occured to me this morning. I'm still fairly certain there has to be very similar handlings of this basic idea already in existence. I'd be interested in learning more about those. Thanks for the replies and allowing me to basically think outloud! |
