I should tell you a little about Lyndsay Reitschel. Tim first met him in the late 1970's when he joined the group 'The Young Magicians'. Lyndsay didn't teach tricks, he expected his students to learn them themselves, he taught presentation.
In 1989, Tim teamed up with Lyndsay and started 'Magic Unlimited's Magic School', again emphasising the teaching of presentation. Many people were transformed as they passed through Magic School, the most dramatic was Enzo Ficco becoming Al Cappuccino, the magical gangster. Lyndsay knocked my socks off when I first met him in 2001. He was recovering from surgery in a Melbourne hospital. A perfect gentleman, I thought. On the surface I couldn't see what all the talk was about...the loudness, the brashness, the hard biting honesty that flawed all who came across his path... athough I did sensed a little devil paying great attention to my words and actions as he carefully posed just the right questions, cues and senarios to test my wits, my personality, strengths and skills. He played the game well. Our first meeting ended with me wanting ever so much to see him again. He was supportive and caring, he listened carefully as we spoke about anything and everything. And so it continued after he left hospital. We would speak for hours on end over the phone. Lyndsay had an incedibly creative mind. A master of ideas...although I never did like his idea of how female magicians should dress on stage. But hey, as ahead of his time he may have been, he was all male at heart!!! Bless him. I felt like I caught up on many lost years as a 'Young Magician'. Lyndsay decided to whollop me over the head with criticism after I performed at a close-up magic convention in Melbourne. I was just trying out a few things... then WHAM! I felt the decidedly blunt sting of Lyndsay's opinions on my performance and how I could improve. I knew I definitely had this great man's attention and that was advantageous...I also knew that beyond his opinion, he cared and he was curious to know how I'd respond. I felt honoured that he spared the time for me.. Lyndsay bothered with people, he spoke his mind and the truth...what better person to spa with, an incredible mentor, a loud, bolstering, big hearted, caring and sensitive man. I grew to love him over the very short time I knew him. He played a huge part in Tim's life and I'll always be grateful for the time he gave to us. You certainly know when Lyndasy's in your life...and, when in quiet contemplation your ears are left ringing from the great noise that once graced this earth, you certainly know when he's gone. His spirit has touched many lives in Australian magic and we will continue to honour him. My whole experience with Lyndsay came full circle at his funeral when his friend Peter Cook passed on to me some of Lyndsay's comments to him. "She bounced back after the blasting I gave her". Peter said that Lyndsay seemed impressed with that and that I'd gotten a tick from him (Lyndsay). That meant so much to me. Thank you, Lyndsay! |
