When John Carney performed Pheonix Aces for me, the cards just seem to quietly blossom into view. There was no slapping for the steals. It seemed like he was massaging the cards gently. This is about the best I can describe his handling.
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.

I’m really impressed by Whit Haydn’s performance. Is the shift to palm move he is using described in Green’s Professional Card Magic or could you point me to another source?
Thanks, Lui. |

Here is very nice performance of the effect.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ywow4cFaUAw Not sure if I like the idea of showing the aces before they are produced. Seems a bit to much like and exhibition of skill than a magical effect when performed that way. Of coarse that is just theory. The proof is in the reaction. I have always felt that ace productions were much better used as an intro to a routine as apposed to climax. What do you guys think? Robert |

Robert I think you have a very good point, I like the idea of handing out a deck from the pocket requesting that the spectator gathers the aces for your next effect, then proceed to appear them from the air as the spectator informs that they are not in the deck.

Yeah, that is nice. And yes, I think it's a magical production when introduced in a good way. GW performs it in the way Robert describes as part of his 'Reset with a hook' routine.

Ricky Jay performs this effect - He calls it 'The Laughing Card Trick'. I have only read a description of his performance for this trick. He seems to sit there and laugh, whilst perfoming the 'Phoenix Aces'. Seems quite charming to me. Ricky certainly perfoms this better than me. I usually just cry whilst dropping the cards on the floor...

In 2003 or so I saw Mr. Jay perform his take on "Phoenix Aces" as his opening piece in his solo show: "Ricky Jay: On The Stem" at New York's "Second Stage Theater." His version was a production of four kings and had a lovely, very magical kicker. Here is my recollection of the trick:
He entered SR with cards in full right hand palm and produced a King (actually the four kings as one as per normal, rotating them (in the approved fashion) in front of his face, peeling it and placing it (face side visible) between his lips. He peeled it in such a way that the remaining three cards remained in full palm. He repeated the production and "peel" two more times until there was but one card left to produce. This he did and placed this last King between his lips and posed in the applause position. The crowd went wild (no surprise) and he made a small bow with cards still between his lips. Very nice, so far. He then gathered the cards hiding them briefly into a small packet, made some sort of gesture and by means of a face-high Elmsley count (or equivalent) showed the audience that the cards had changed to aces. It was then that the audience begin to uproot their chairs... Mr. Jay had a very nice clean-up that fits his well-known skill set admirably. He simply "scaled" each individual card into the stage left wing. At this point one couldn't really tell what was being thrown--but it was four throws only--everyone was so busy clapping and shouting. Heat was off the cards as attention was now on his signature card throws. Perfectly economical misdirection. This is not a close-up version, but who cares? It was perfect for the venue. Masterful. |

Oh Lucky - You are flipping me out & your description comes in like lucite . . . but really, you saw the cards, 4 of them, fly off-stage? The greatness of the man! I would love to have had your experience & an open-sesame welcome to the Magic Café & that is one great story that you fell into.

To add to the variations and sources...there is Ross Bertram's book - 'Bertram on Sleight of Hand'.
In there is 'Squeeze', which he squeezes 4 Aces from his fist. Anyways, here is my Pheonx Aces. At the end I like to produce a 5th Ace via Roy Benson's production. |

Late to this thread, but I will add this.
I've been doing The Phoenix Aces for 45 years. My handling has parts of Green's original, my own, and the steal from Gene Maze. It was published in CardMagic in 1979. No one was doing anything from Cliff Green's book at that time except Ricky Jay, who performed The Laughing Card Trick (Green's "Ace of Spades as a Sorcerer's Apprentice). I performed it for many years with great success and still do. Greg Wilson performed my method at the Castle and almost put it on his DVD until I stopped him. So he put Cliff Green's original method on his DVD, but without any real idea of how to do it (since it's not what he normally did). Carlos Vaquera does a very nice version of my method. Pop Hayden does Cliff Green's method very nicely, but not exactly like Green. I also do Green's original method. The descriptions in Green's book are not perfect, and people do not know how to read. I have seen video of Green doing the trick and even after studying the book for many decades I learned things from the video. If anyone has questions please feel free to ask. |

How or where does one look for a video of Green doing the routine you like so much?

The videos are not public. In private collections that I was able to access. What I can tell you is that the instructions for Phoenix Aces are the most clearly written text in Professional Card Magic, and that if you read and truly understand the instructions you will do it exactly as I saw Green do it.
The one piece of advice I can give after watching Green's performance is how the Lunge Pushover is done casually on the offbeat. No attention is paid to the hands at that moment. |

I would love to see those videos as well. My routine is basically Cliff Green's, but making minor adjustments since he basically did this effect in platform, and I usually use it in close up.
The multiple shift I use is from Arthur Buckley. The only change in handling of the productions from Green's was that I didn't flick each card into the wings. I let the cards be dropped to the table or bar, because I generally use this routine in close-up and bar work. |

Pop does a great handling. Mostly Cliff Green's, as he says.
Green did not flick the just-produced card "into the wings," but merely away from his hand and onto the floor immediately in front of him. |
