Hi guys, first post.....
First of all I can't necessarily say I'm a magician (I USE to be into it, not much anymore). I remember doing magic a couple years ago and was really good at a few tricks. I do the pass flawlessly, my double lift is almost 99% done right all the time, and I know a few flourishes. However I'm not even a hobbyist, I just do the tricks whenever I may get cards in my hands. Regardless I wanted to know of some tricks I can do (strictly with cards) which can better my current amount that I do. The one's I perform since I've practised to do them flawlessly are: - Be honest what is it / 2 card monte - Here then there - Biddle Trick - Ambitious card - Not really a sleight of hand trick, but invisible deck.... - Card in window, fun tricks along those lines.... - Then there's on trick I forgot the name of. Basically I have a person select a card, make three piles, and tell them I'll eliminate 3 cards from the bottom of the deck. As I place the last card down (which they think is their card) I switch it. It really has nothing to do with my question, but meh.... Anyways I was curious to know of any other tricks I can do to add to this. The card through window and invisible deck aren't always with me, so I'm looking for good non gimmicked tricks I could perform. If any of you could recommend some I'd appreciate it.... Thanks |

Try some effects that involve palming...palming is a very valuable sleight. I won't go into specific effects, but what books or videos do you own?

Find a book like card college. Follow through it from beginning to end.
You want to learn tricks with no basic skills to help you. Find a way to learn basics, then move to actual tricks.

I think getting the card college book is sound advice. It is a very enjoyable read and the effects are quite powerful.

Dear Razix:
I am curious about a few things: 1. Are you only interested in card tricks; 2. Whatever we suggest, do I understand that you do not want any "Gimmicked" effects. If so, are you saying that with card effects, for example, you want effects with a completely regular ungaffed deck; I know that depending on your job and/or family status, you may not have the time or inclination to read books, and I do not blame you, as you canididly admit you are a hobbyist and time for most of us is tight. That's fine by the way. As such, it seems that you are asking our advice, since many of us have read the books and expiermented with varrious effects. That's fine too. I would just like to know the answers to the above, and I think that we can help you out. Regards, Bob |

Razix stated in his first post that he was interested only in cards.
He also stated that he performs only when he gets a pack of cards in his hands, which to me means his performances are improptu and that he is interested in impromtu effects and not gimmicked cards. As he is a hobbyist who does not seem too interested in reading the classic books on Card Magic, I'd suggest getting something like Michael Ammar's compilation DVD's on Card Tricks. It'll give him all the tricks he'll need for what he is interested in doing. - entity

I am pretty much interested in card tricks as I feel I have a good handle on them (more than the basics) so I feel like I can pick up tricks a lot easier, not too fond on coins. And I'd use an ungimmicked pack because you don't always have the chance to implement the gimmick, especially when someone hands you the deck.
Reading books on magic would take me a lot of time, but if it helps me more in the long run I guess I can give it a shot sometime in the summer. Like I said I don't do magic often (I use to) but I would still like to add some more good ones. It's a wonderful art, just some people are a lot more interested in others. And regarding the Ammar videos, I ordered some of the volumes and will be watching, heard nothing but good things about those. |

So in other words you want to be able to say your a magician and not put in all the years of work and study that SHOULD go with that title?
Do you guys realise how wrong this is? What you want to be is a magic FAN. I don't care who you perform for or how many times you do it, if you want to claim to be a magician then by gosh you should put in the work period. Otherwise you will reflect poorly on all of us who have. I know this is an unpopular opinionbut put in the work. Why should you get the rewards if your not willing to risk? Too much trouble to read a book? Maybe its just me but that really seems lazy.

You'll be fine.
You say "I own a lot, but only tend to grasp the tricks I like." We don't really know what tricks you may like and it's really up to you to explore. However, it does come down to what the people you do tricks for might like. I like your choices thus far. |

Dannydoyle, I said in my first post that I wasn't a magician. I just like the art and do tricks which are a lot better than the 3 rows of 7 and simple uncreative tricks like that. I'll watch the Ammar videos and maybe I'll get back into it like I was a couple years back. After all, I'm not hurting the art am I? At least I'm showing the laymen there is more than Blaine out there and a lot of other great unknown magicians exist.
Thanks for all your responses so far.... |

Well, you say you're showing laymen that there's more than blaine out their...and yet your list contains mostly David Blaine tricks!
If people get the idea that anyone can do the tricks David Blaine does, you are hurting magic. Your only not hurting the art if you perform as well as the pro's... which means be original in the way you present magic, learn about showmanship, and create a magical atmosphere as you perform. The One
