I somehow fail to see how "Run Rabbitt Run" can take away from anybody's spirituality and control cultures. I would be far less concerned by being "controlled" by a card trick and extremely concerned about this "Pastor's" control over his congragation. Since the Bible has more "magic tricks" in it than most modern day magic books, I question what his motivation is for not allowing a fundraiser that includes magic. What a wonderful society we live in!!!Very scary indeed.

He is not against fundraisers, and "tricks" that tell stories; it's anything that touches the deceiving of people. I respect his viewpoint even though I don't agree with it.
It is those tricks in the bible, which has lead him to his beliefs. Those tricks are done to control people back then, and a lot of it was negative in it's use. It was in essence a religious way of life that is contrary to the Christian way of life. He doesn't allow Yoga because it is based on a different religious philosophy. Again, I now understand his convictions, but I don't agree with them. I was hoping not to get into religious philosophy because of the broad different viewpoints on this topic.

Dennis,
I have encountered people who find the word "magic" to be offensive. Since I perform for both secular and Gospel audiences and am a follower of Christ, I understand some of the objections. I was once performing for a street festival when a woman came out of the crowd and explained that she did not believe in magic and was leaving. I smiled and explained that I didn't "believe" in magic either, but merely performed illusions to entertain others. To my surprise, she too smiled as if she had suddenly understood and even let me use her son as a participant in my next trick. It seems that for most people (who are of the belief that magic tricks are evil), a clear explanation of what we as magicians do (entertain) will suffice. I know this is not always true as you have shown and this is unfortunate. Andrew |

Never had any problem with any of my Catholic Church shows. Catholics don't generally have a problem with "magic".
The two problems I did have involved 1) one parent getting me cancelled at a Baptist school...after the other Baptist parent hired me (!) and 2) having a woman walk out of my company dinner show (for her own religious reasons). She sat in the car on a 29 degree night. She left as I started sponge ball routine (quite the heretic, I am.) I'm a Christian and of course don't see anything wrong with entertaining with magic. But as others have said, "when in Rome...". Steve H (oops, I'm afraid caffeine is on some of the lists, too! )
Like Bonnie Raitt said, "I miss Little Feat more than I miss being 8 years old." Thanks for the concerts + recordings, Lowell, Richie, and Paul!

It's a shame, Dennis, that you can't volunteer your talents at your own church. Do you know how your paster feels about puppets or ventriloquism? Is something like the Axtell Drawing Board, Rocky or a rabbit in the hat puppet routine considered magic?
I myself think displaying a moving image on a television is just as magical and is probably just as influential in deception as any magic show. You may consider donating a show to a neighboring church instead. Perhaps a church school would be interested in a fundraiser. I have donated birthday magic shows to auctions held by schools. I could say more but I gotta go... I don't want to miss the pet psychic show on TV

Hi,
Interestingly and and leading on from what has been discussed here Quote: " I smiled and explained that I didn't "believe" in magic either, but merely performed illusions to entertain others. To my surprise, she too smiled as if she had suddenly understood and even let me use her son as a participant in my next trick." What do you(everyone)say to children when they ask (gennerally not just at church gigs) "how are you magic or how do you do magic?" Phillip |

"I am a magician and love to have fun and entertain and play with magic tricks. Anybody can do it by reading magic books and practicing. How they are done, is written in those books. That's one reason why it is very important to learn to read while in school."

p.b. jones, Sometimes during a show I see that some parents might be uneasy about the "magic" I do. It is just the usual kids routines. I even have a Gospel magic show for churches as well, and still get "elders" who are uneasy. Then, it never fails, a little tyke will ask, "is there real magic?" or "Are you doing real magic?" I respond, or end all of my Gospel shows with: "No, I don't do real magic, just tricks. The real magic is in you and how God/Jesus/The Lord works through you to help others and spread his word." Or I say, "No, I don't do real magic, the real magic is in you, the miracle of you as a baby, and how you change as you grow up." It doesn't necessarily satisfy the children, but it does put the parents at ease.
Definitely a nerd, in science, technology, and magic.

Try the approach of telling them you are a performer who uses phyiscal illustrations to prove your point. I don't care if they call it gobbaldygook and me a gobbaldygookian just as long as they call me and call me back
Jeff Also the "trick or magic" professers supream with a gospel overtone has converted a few of them to magic... Jeff again |

About 20 years ago, I did a church show that I thought had bombed. I performed in their sanctuary, right in front of the alter (that's where they put me... it was not my choice). That audience was the coldest bunch of people I've ever worked for. I couldn't make them laugh, respond, or do anything. My 45 minute show ended up being about 30 minutes because I couldn't get any interaction from them. Not one laugh.
I was loading my show into my van afterwards, wondering if I'd completely lost my talent or what when one of the elders came up to me. He threw an arm around my shoulder and said, "Son, that was the funniest, best magic show I've ever seen. You got yourself a load of talent!" I objected. "No one laughed. No one applauded. It was awful!" He shook his head. "Son, you were in our sanctuary. We're not allowed to laugh or clap in there. I had to keep biting the insides of my lip to keep from busting a gut." Slowly but surely, almost everyone who was in the audience came up to me outside and offered their congratulatory remarks on a fine show. But in the meantime, there's nothing worse in the pit of your stomach than watching yourself bomb because of a misunderstanding. As a footnote, I did the same church about a year later, this time in their fellowship hall, and it was a great show with the expected reactions. I only wish I could remember the demonination (perhaps Mennonite?). |

That's a little weird that they can't laugh or clap but they allow a performance to be put on in the same room... Anyways interesting story, I would be so discouraged if something like happened to me.
On the other hand, you have different fingers.

I've heard stories from a friend who performed in Japan with similar experiences. I understand that they don't applaud during shows and don't laugh either. Could be wrong though.
