What introductory, basic books would you suggest for magic beginners? Thanks.

Just look up there, a couple of posts above, to the one titled, 'Recommended Books for Beginners'. And just as a gentle introduction to the Café, please look before you ask. And be sure to use the 'Cafe Quicksearch' feature at the top of the page, just below the Café logo. Thanks.

My Major recommendations:
-Mark Wilsons "Complete Course in Magic" -J.B. Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic" -Jean Hugard and Frederick Braue's "Royal Road to Card Magic" -Jean Hugard and Frederick Braue's "Expert Card Technique" -Tarbell Course in Magic (8 Volumes.) -Card College. (5 Volumes) DVD's: -"Born to Perform Card Magic" with Oz Pearlman. -Michael Ammar's "Easy to Master Card Miracles" (9 Volumes) -Michael Ammar's "Easy to Master Money Miracles" (3 Volumes?) -Michael Ammar's "Easy to Master Thread Miracles" (3 Volumes.) Those are just a few major books/DVDs you may want to look into. I am trying to get a website going that will cover books, DVD's tricks, and different stuff that will help beginning magicians out. Stay tooned! |

Hi Briana,
I have two suggestions. My first is "The Magic Book" by Harry Lorayne. After 40 years in magic, I have never found a book that is better to go back to. It is fun, entertaining and educational. It is also cheap and you get more than you pay for. Second, I would encourage you to go to your public library and spend an afternoon looking through all of the magic books there. (Especially magic for children.) There are some wonderful little jewels in there that will serve you well. While many of us are proud of our slights and gimmicks, there are still things that we use from our youth.(Many of the great ones will not tell you, but they still remember Jumping Rubberbands.) If I can help, let me know. Peace, Parson

Mark Wilson's "Complete Course in Magic" is one of the best for beginners and veteran's alike.
The "Cyclopedia of Magic" is a scaled down, smaller version (not just in size) of the Complete Course with a lot of material left out. It is also much harder to handle given the actual size of the book. There is so much material there that you will have lot's to study for some time to come. I am constantly referring back to mine. It's a great addition to any magicians library. Mark. I would recommend Tarbell since it covers a wide verity of stuff and it is some thing you can use from beginner to pro.

This book is very good, one of the illusions (I think its the mystery mummy) was actually performed on a cruise ship I was on. This big magic show on a ship with 1200 passengers, and the idea comes from a 12.95 book, amazing! |
