I do mostly a talking act, but I would like to include a routine to music in my show. I like silks because they are very visual. I have done some silk routines. I do silk to egg and the half dyed hank. Can anyone recommend a good place to start for performing silk routines to music?
I perform for adults. I have seen some of Jonathan Neal Browns silk routines performed to music an they were great! Thanks Simon

Hey Simon,
Like you, I also do a lot of taking during my show with background music. I also have some silk routines in my show and one of my favorite is the one marketed by Malloy Magic called "Arlington Silk Flight". The music I used during my show runs for 35-40 minutes long. This is one song only which I looped to make it run for that duration. Btw, can you give me a description of Jonathan Neal Brown's silk routine? Thanks a lot! Sal |

Sal,
I saw the Arlington silk flight, but I think that uses a spectator, right? I want to do a routine by myself to music. I have a lot of routines where I use a spectator, too many in fact. Consequently, I feel my show kind of drags. Jonathan Neal performed at a show here in Japan. He did some nice flip stick stuff, then he pulled about 5 separate silks from his mouth and then turned it into a blendo. He was dancing the whole time to some cool jazzy music. I would love to learn more about Jonathan Neal but I can't seem to find any videos of his. Anyone know more about him?] Anyway, I like silks because they are visual and can play to children and adults. I am ordering some of Duane Laflin's dvds and I am studying Rice. Thanks

Hey Simon,
Laflin has a lot of good routines with silks. You should be able to get some on those dvd's. I also have some cool silk fountain routine and my favorite one in turning them into a giant 36" Peacock Silk. Since you are in Japan, why don't you try looking at U.G.M's website. They have a category called "Silk Magic". Here is the link... http://www.ugm.co.jp Sal |

Thanks Amos.
Are there any good performance only videos of silk magic? What pros are known for silk magic?

Buy Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic.
It's all you'll need to put together a routine.

I remember a lot of "silk magicians" from the '50s and '60s, but there aren't a lot of folks these days who make this a major part of their acts. Many of them use silks as an emphasis as part of a larger routine (Murray Sawchuk, George Saterial) or as a production item, but I don't know of a lot of magicians that make them a major part of their shows.
I'm sure someone on this board can help you. Amos McCormick

I have several of Duane Laflin's videos and, in my opinion, he does great work. Several of his routines can be performed only to music, such as his multiple tt effect. I have seen Duane perform live many times and his stuff has always come across wonderfully with the audience.

To quote Marvin Roy, (who once did an entire silk act) "Magicians are just too lazy".
It takes a fair amount of work to make a silk act up and do it. Audiences love it but just too much work for a lot of performers. But the working pros that do take the time to fully develop this type of act are working. To succeed in any business you have to put in the effort. Richard
