The two thousand pounds sterling fee for insurance from Equity follows Swami Beyondananda's Rule about Sacred Cows - "If You See A Sacred Cow - Milk It For All It's Worth!"
Stage hyposis, as evidenced from this group and from the plethora of classes being taught across the western world these days, is a growth industry and, at least in the UK, the insurance agency for Actor's Equity (always quick to try to make an extra buck/pound off of anything that is billable in my experience) has obviously decided to milk that cash cow, big time! It's simple economics - more people want to BE stage hypnotists, so risk levels for claims (however spurious) rise on a geometric basis (welcome to liability insurance risk management 101, folks). So, because there are more people out there to insure, they have to deepen the pool of insurance funds to cover the risks, hence, they raise the premiums. Thus endeth the lesson. Lee Darrow, C.H.

However the more stage hypnotists wannabees the lower value and fees. Plus hypnosis largely lost its mystery and gloss with the armies of failed comedians and child entertainers that swamped the UK a while back.
The few hypnotists that are doing the rare rounds where I am charge less than I charged 15 years ago! So in that respect for me the demand isn't their in terms of what fees will be paid. Temple magic said "Also the reason for the insurance being so high is that there is a fair chance that a money grabber could use our modern blame culture to accuse a stage hypnotist of psychological damage and this would be very difficult to prove untrue... Plus with regard to demand for hypnosis shows, I've never been busier here in the UK..." I would've thought that the revised 1952 act would've made it much more difficult to claim psychological damage? Im not sure there are more people out there at the moment. But something tells me that might change. I prefered the good old days when there was still some mystery left and a hypnotist was a special act. I think the internet has had a lot to do with it. Hypnosis has lost some of its sparkle. |

"Hypnosis has lost some of its sparkle."
Truer words were never spoken. And I would add to that that some, and I stress SOME, of the acts out there seem to have more than a bit of the sadistic element to them and/or much more of an overtly sexual element, with the age ranges on the sexual issues ranging decidedly downward into areas that are highly questionable in the opinions of many established pros that I have spoken to. One act, whose video is plastered all over the net, has kids at a high school post prom doing the "Big 'O'" effect for crying out loud (and several of them most decidedly do exactly that)! This has caused several school districts to outright BAN stage hypnosis from their future post prom and grad night programs. So, "lost some of its sparkle" might be too tame. "Tarnished by a few sick-o's" might be a better way of putting it. Lee Darrow, C.H.
