In retail it's all about volume, the more you can move the lower you can price it. That's how it works. I used to offer free shipping on all my orders, but since The SpookClub opened in 2003, Canada Post has had 2 or 3 rate hikes to reflect the costs in fuel and whatnot. Not to mention the shipping rates within Canada were high to begin with. Some times it's actually cheaper for me to ship to Florida (other side of the continent) than to ship within my own province. ??? I had to change our free shipping policy to orders over $40CDN. And $4.99CDN isn't too much of a shipping charge anyhow considering most times it is costing me more than that to ship orders. Sincerely, Wayne Stevenson The SpookClub |

I appreciate how they state their shipping charges up front before you place the order. You know exactly how much they will charge to your credit card.

I've been a big fan of Penguin for some time. They've gotten a bad rap here and there on the Café, but they constantly improve their business, which is really admirabe. The 10%-off, free shipping, special order catalog, and occasional M&M's really set them apart from a lot of other shops. No affiliation, just my two cents for those of you unfamiliar with PM.

Here are a couple of reasons that Penguin can offer free shipping. Some of their products are knock offs which they are able to get made cheaper than the originals. These props are not even close to the quality of the original trick but, what the heck you save a couple of bucks on shipping. Also some of their original DVD's are poorly made and use second rate performers who can't find work anywhere else. They do carry some items which are good and their prices are tough to beat. Although, by buying these items you are giving them money so they can continue to sell knock offs and put out second rate DVD's.

Also penguinmagic has instant downloads, that cost them nothing (they are rip offs of other effects) but they charge tons for them. I imagine they use that revenue to pay for shipping and low prices on other items.
