I see this expression come up so often where a magician is said to be
performing underground or from the underground or something like that. Can someone tell me what this means? I did a quick search and found nothing after 3 pages. I've heard this about Sol Stone and Jason Borne.

I think it just means that they've been recognized and gotten a "behind closed doors type reputation" within the magic fraternity, but haven't necessarily been largely publicised.

More likely it means they have been dead and buried for years, only they just don't know it yet.

An underground magician is a magician who is not known by magic's general population but who's work is highly praised and sought out by magic's elite.

In the entertainment industry as a whole, underground just means, not well known...not famous....but has nothing to do with how good or profficent you are at your craft. you could be better than lance Burton (not likely but could) and just not be discovered yet, or have not pushed yourself into the corp. trade shows, or anything that you are making serious money off of it. I feal performing underground as I see it, would mean performing just for the love of the craft...spellbinder, you should be ashamed of yourself for your statement, remember the true magic is not what we do, but what our spectator does, and the reactions they give!

I kind of thought it was something like that. I appreciate the clarification.
From what I gather, someone who is labeled "underground" is someone who is not known to the general public, but known umongst some magic circles as someone who is very proficient in their craft and could, if they wanted to, become famous. Thanks again.

You've heard of the London Underground? This is of course the rail system under that great city in Britian. Originally a small group of high level magic types met IN the Underground and secretly therein. Thus the concept: Underground magician. The idea took hold as various members 'came out' and became famous for their various magic creations. As others worked secretly in there homes and by degrees became known to only a few other magicians these secretive types became known as "those in the Underground" harkening back to the days of the Underground meeting in England.
For the record: I just made it up. Total fabrication on my part, but I thought it was a much more elegant explanation of the title than otherwise offered. Best,

I came very close to just tossing it out there without the disclaimer as a joke, but I have learned that stuff like this gets passed about so fast that before you know it is 'real' no matter what is said after!
To illustrate: As a joke a fellow that worked for me called me at my magic shop one day and told me that 'so-and-so' was dead! He'd just died and what a bummer, etc. Well, before he could fess up I had hung up the phone and called one of the leading publishers in magic and passed on the news. In less than an hour we had calls from the New York City asking if it was true! Sigh.... The outcome was a total mess. At one point the only way out looked to be travelling to another state and actually killing the magician that was the 'supposed' to be dead. It took a couple of hours of argumentation, but we finally decided that that was a tad rash and decided to just own up to it all being the joke of my EX employee. It actually was pretty funny even at the time it happened. When the guy who had started it found out what had happened......well.... Best,

Brad, I don't believe you just made it up. You just don't want others to know the truth. Now when someone mentions it, someone from the Café will say "Aw, that's a made up story". I know a cover-up when I see it. Nice try, I'm calling the press.
