This last weekend I worked a corporate event for Qualcomm in San Diego. The theme of the party was magic and there must have been 15 magicians strolling, doing stage shows, close up, mentalism...you name it and it was there. (BTW I was not performing magic, I was working on the audio crew)
This was the 1st time I have spent any time with professional magicians since I began to learn the art myself. I introduced myself to a few of the pros and mentioned that I was a beginner and pretty much every magician I spoke to took the time out to teach me something or give me advice. I have always thought of magic as a brotherhood, but now I am sure of it. A couple of the pros even kept trying to get me to perform a bit for the public but I politely declined, after all they were the ones hired to entertain and I didn't feel it was ethical of me to perform. This experience really has given me even more drive to practice and start going to my local IBM meetings. Thanks to Danny Magic for letting me tag along with you for so long as you performed and for showing me some new subtleties, effects, and handings. And thanks to Joe Mystic for helping me with the bill switch.

Spirited goodwill or camaraderie is infectious and exhibited unselfishly within the brotherhood of Magic. It is for the betterment and survival of the art. Remember to share with others as you progress in your journey,

I shouldn't be prejudiced against people different to us, but really, Magicians should rule the world.

I have never met a group of people so willing to to accept a new member and help him (or her) in learning the art.

I am so glad you had such a positive experience.
The old saying that a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step rings in my ears. The journey to becoming a magi, starts with one trick, a desire to learn and the ambition to perform. It is a great life... enjoy it for all its worth.

It's true, magicians are some of the most generous people you'll come across. With all the backstabbing in all the "business," it's nice to know that comraderie and ethics mean something. I'm glad you had a positive experience; this is an example of the kind of thing you'll run into at conventions.
At the Midwest Magic Jubilee, Jimmy Molinari was readily available and more than willing to help with something, or answer questions throughout the convention; in short, he was very generous with his time. To quote George Carlin, "I don't really have an end for this, so I'll just take a small bow." |

Wow...a truly wonderful post, Afillius. I can relate...
When my Dad died a few years ago, I went to a gathering of the local magicians after I got back from the funeral. I just HAD to get out, and that was the "happening thing" that night. I have to admit, I was not very animated, or enthusiastic. By the time the evening was over, I was laughing, having a great time. Trading sleights, getting great advice, and learning some great new tips! My own FRIENDS (including my then-girlfriend) could not have pulled me out of that shell I was in. It took people just like YOU (and You and YOU too!). For that, I am forever grateful! Doug |

Seadawg, you swiped my saying!! And DOug, that is a delightful story.
YEs, magicians are a very nice breed (if sometimes a little odd!). I have met very few magicians, until I went to the Blackpool magic conference last year - everyone is extremely friendly, and the mutual sharing of advice is excellent to see. Simon |

After many years in the biz I will have to say that on the whole and considering the incredible diversity you find in those who do magic for either a living or fun, I think it would be almost impossible to find a nicer more generous group of people anywhere! The only thing and I MEAN the ONLY thing I miss from closing down my shop is doing magic for and with the people who came in. Sigh.....
Best to you all,
Brad Burt

That is a great story and it's good to know it's being noticed (Even if only by other magicians). Many forms of entertainment are filled with competitions against other performers of that art. Magicians seem more up to trying to make other magicians better. I know that when I go to a magic gathering and see a group of magicians sitting around. I'll show them one more I made up and it never fails that they in turn teach me a number of things.
I can also relate to your story in a big way. I already posted about this in the "What happened was this" section but I'll touch on it now. A few years ago I went to the Abbott's get together. As always money was a tight situation but I had enough to go. I just knew I wouldn't be purchasing much. I entered a couple of magic contests and won Peoples choice for both close up and stage. So that money was a big help. That night I put my stuff away in my tent and went to hangout at the fire with everyone else. When I woke up I found out I had been robbed and all my money was gone. There are two major night hang outs there. The Legion and a bar called Curly's. I was in the Legion and someone asked me to fallow them to the bar. When I walked in they brought me up and with a microphone announce to the entire bar what happened to me about being robbed. Then they handed me a hat full of money. The town filled with magicians had took up a collection for me. The money was a huge help but it was the unity that touched me so much. Yea, the brotherhood is alive and well. Ron Jaxon |
