This works best verbally, I used to use it as an icebreaker in training sessions in an old job and it was interesting to see the speed at which different people got it.
Imagine you are the captain of an ocean liner that leaves Portsmoth Harbour in May 2002 and travels for 3 months to the coast of South Africa. There 14 people leave the ship and 16 get on. The average age of the passengers through this change of personnel goes up by 1.2 years. The ship carries on for a further 9 months and each of the next 10 stops 2 passengers get off. The average age of the passengers goes down after the these cumulative changes by 5 years. The ship arrives back at its original destination 12 months to the day that it left, i.e May 2003 and during that time the average age of the passengers has gone down by 3.8 years and there are 18 less passengers than when it started. How old is the Captain ? |
