Very few magicians can perform more than the odd trick at a moments notice, except in the 'Go on show us a trick then' area. Sometimes this produces poor magic or worse still, poor performance,A bad advert for all of us.
Most professional have already in their repertoire rehearsed & scripted ad libs and heckler stoppers. You must do the same with your tricks. Sort out say three routines you could do at a moments notice. 1 routine using any articles that might be around. List the possibilities and find tricks using them. The other 2 routines with SMALL items you can carry permanently in your pockets. Notice I said permanently, changing them from 1 coat/jacket to another but always keeping those items in your pockets wherever you go. Rehearse the routines, not just the tricks. When asked, delay if you can, saying "In a few minutes I'll show you something you'll always remember" This idea is from Chris Dugdale ( Psychology for Magicians Vol.2). Watch out USA for his new course & workshops.Carry on with the conversation or fetch a drink from the bar. This gives you thinking time, mind preparing time, and hopefully anticipation time for them. WAIT for them to ask again. Show them. Go to the bar or toilet and let them talk about what they have seen. When you return do ONE encore if you must. Then finish. Please make sure you rehearse these routines as much as you would rehearse your Act. That'll keep your Magic polished and professional. Don't do what I've read on another Forum where the magician goes into the local public house EVERY week and shows off TWO hours of non stop card tricks each time. Heaven knows how he learns them all. The answer is . he doesn't. So what standard of magic is he performing. If you can find the booklet by U.F Grant called Challenge Magic in which he gives you a simple system & ideas for performing an Act with articles submitted by the audience, then read it. At the same time keep a deck of cards, a thumb tip,a few rubber bans, some rehearsed with coins,( don't use strange ones) a silk or clean handkerchief, a pen ( possible the magnetic one) in your pockets ready for that moments notice request.
