Rob's post about not using Off-The-Meter mainly pertains to children with autism as many of these kids have difficulty coping with lots of noise. The excitement level of your show may in itself create a difficult environment for them.
As Steve alluded to, you can limit the yelling & screaming by announcing that the "Clap O Meter" will show only how well you can clap. As far as breaking the meter, this MAY be upsetting to any autistic children, but I doubt it based on 15 years of performing for children with disabilities. Autism runs the spectrum of behavior difficulties, so it is impossible to make general statements. The best thing to do is talk to parents, caregivers, or personal care assistants before the show and get a feel for the audience. Blessings to all who reach out to children with disabilities (not disabled children)

Something I have noticed when working a rest home is the audience is sometimes more reluctant to volunteer. One time this resulted in me finishing earlier than announced. One little ole blue haired lady in the back said, "Well good....I can still catch the end of Wheel of Fortune!" How humbling.....

Great work Brian and to all the volunteers. Giving back freely is a wonderful experience. Don't be afraid to give back ever.
