I don't' want to get into a "bashing" thing, but does anyone know anything about the "International Magicians Society"?? I read somewhere that it's simply a front for a guy who sells videos.
They have a web site that looks like it was slopped together in 3 hours.

That sounds about right.

Our Secretary/Treasurer Mike Durant usually handles member registration. I went ahead and dug your name out of the hundred or so spam messages we get a day and processed your application. You should be receiving a confirmation letter shortly.

The IMS is basically a source of videos, but there are a lot of good videos in their catalog, and a lot are done by popular magicians. Though you do have to pay a fee for membership and another fee if you want to take their "magic doctor" exam, whatever that means. I would recommend finding a member and asking them to order videos for you.

I think membership is free if you purchase 2 videos.
Tony Hussien actually runs this IMS and they do put out decent quality videos by top name magicians for a very cheap price. There are no meetings or newsletter. Once a year Tony presents a famous magician the IMS magician of the year award before a large crowd at an event where this magician is performing. |

Just some corrections. Its actually Tony Hassini and they do have clubs supposedly though I have never seen one. You can open up a local chapter according to the website. once every three years they have a dinner for IMS members where they present the Merlin Award to who they feel is the best magician at that time

Is anyone out there a member of IMS? If so, how have you found the benefits?
Thanks

It was a good idea that didn't quite work the way it was planned. The idea of the IMS was to have a magic society, and the bulk of the income would go towards making these teaching videos. The series they have produced so far are very good and by some top magicians. You get a discount if you are a member and I think a lifetime membership is 25 dollars. The videos are available on places like magic auction and ebay frequently at about 25% of the posted price. Tony is both a magician and a film maker. I met him at WMS, a nice guy. They are still trying to make it work, but so far there has been limited participation. Their magic academy series is a pretty good series for a beginner, and they have done several other special videos as well. The password to the website is not worth a lot since the protected area hasn't changed in a good number of years.
The original idea was great. Bunch of magicians pay 25 dollars for a lifetime membership. The money is then used to suppliment production of good teaching magic videos by name performers, which would be sold to members at a discount, non members would pay a premium price for the videos. They intended to have local clubs, I understand there is at least one if not two of them. It was to be an international organization, and was started at a time when magic videos were still somewhat scarce. The merlin awards was also a good idea, but I think the board of directors, largely hand picked by Toney, select the winners. There is no magazine, convention, etc. You get a membership card and nice membership certificate that would probably impress laymen.

Don't forget the PIN!
You also get a small, square, Blue IMS Lapel pin. I think the pin looks very nice. I have been a member since he started the IMS, in the begining you got a 3 ring binder with some paperwork about the IMS and some history of magicians. You also got a free video of Houdini and some other magicians from the golden age. I have known Tony since around 1994. He shoots a LOT of Rocco stuff (and if you are into Rocco, that's the best place to get his material, BTW.) and does some consulting for D'Lite. He is a very nice guy who loves magic, magicians and the art. Side bar: Did you know that Tony was the Burger King Magician back in the 70's? Although his videos are kind of "raw", he gets the very best in the business to share some World-Class, Top notch magic. The quality is pretty good, the setting is very informal, so if you are looking for a fancy production over quality work, then this ain't it. BUT, if you want to see real work done in a no nonsence setting then you will love his videos and DVD's. One more thing, If YOU have something of interest and want to put it on video, call Tony, that's the kind of guy he is. He's always open to helping magicians - and that's A GOOD THING! |

I'd agree with Justin, Tony knows how to vid magic, rare you get a film maker that understands magic enough to do filming of it justice. Toney as both a good magician and filmmaker has that special touch when it comes to film. Pin?? what pin?? I never got a pin!

Never got a pin???
Wow, I'd call Tony today and find out why. There's nothing he loves more than seeing someone wear the IMS pin... |

I also became a member, then if you bought the Magic Academy Set you did not need to pay the USD 50 for a lifetime membership. The set of videos is good and is down to business types. The videos are not made or edited like what is being done these days there there is so much editing and special effects to teach one trick. Tony's videos are mor homemade types but in collaboration with known names. The maestros first explain the tricks and then explain it. He has a videos by almost all the big names. In the Magic Academy Series in the last three videos were dedicated to Grand Illusions which to my knowledge still are the only videos available on the subject.
It is good value for money. Having said that I should also add that you get the 1) Membership Card 2) Membership Certificate and 3) A lapel pin along with a Video on Mental Magic by Tony which is good. Everything is well designed. The membership conditions have since changed. The problem is that nothing else happens. They never respond to your mails. So I don't know how do they apply the membership discounts? Since no one ever responded back to me I never bought any other video set from them which is a pity. |

I picked up a bunch of cheap VHS tapes off of the big auction site and learned what black art, toppits, pulls, illusions and etc. were. None of the tapes go into great detail, but all give you enough info to get started. More importantly, as a newbie, you can identify what areas of magic interest you. So I have always seen the IMS as just a good source of videos (especially for beginners) and never quite understood the bashing it often receives. The simple answer for the bashing seems to be that some believe Tony has "cheapened the art" with his "award". |
