Hello !
I do not know much about cards... The only cart trick that I do is "the ultimate three card monte". I do use cards sometimes, but only for mentalism... My question is : the ultimate three card monte can only be performed on a table. Are there alternatives that are just as strong and for which you don't need a table ? |

There are lots of tricks that are AS STRONG (or stronger) as Ultimate Monte, but most monte routines that look anything like a REAL monte require a surface to preform on. That's because the (swindle) game of monte involves tossing the cards to mix them.
Mixing them in your hands is simply not as "fair." That said, Bob Sheets and Mark Mason have in the hands routines that are PRESENTED as monte tricks. The trick is gaffed and no examinable, but if you are used to Ultimate Monte that may not be an issue. The question is must the presentation be a monte/gambling theme or are you simply looking for something that is as direct and easy to follow while still being easy on the hands? |

Actually, I've done 'Color Monte' in hand, without a working surface and some slight modifications.
I use the cards that come with the trick but regular cards can be substituted. You might also want to check 'Stand Up Monte' by Garrett Thomas. |

I've only ever used a table or the floor for the ultimate 3 card monte. Does anyone have any good switches for the ultimate 3 card monte using a deck of cards, so the 3 cards can be examined at the end of the routine?

My idea is too have the cards in a regular deck at start.
This is a decent way to avert suspicion right from the start. The are two switches in "Carneycopia" that will work. If you use a wallet then a z-fold wallet can be used. Another idea, if seated, is palm the regulars and sweep the others off the table. |

That's a good idea Jaz. Would you insert the 3 cards in different locations of the deck and then casually go through the deck at the start of the routine to make it appear to be randomly selecting 3 cards?

Gordon Bean has studied lots of montes and released some of his own standup versions: http://www.magiclaboratory.com

My suggestion to make the Ultimate three card Monte even more effective is to actually perform the trick right in the spectators hands. That goes for all effects. To make the effect stronger - it's in the hands. Get the spectators involved in some way. I remember reading that in Kirk Charles' Complete Guide to Restaurant and Walk Around... it works well!
I want to go far...
