I do Gospel Magic and Gospel Clown Magic, and for my Gospel Clown Magic, for the comedy handkerchief where you do the trick wrong twice and then right the first time, at first I have them say, Noah had an Ark, Moses had a rod, and Samson had a haircut. Then at the last before the trick works, you add Jesus had a Cross. |

I thought I’d follow up on Dave’s post. It seems that there is linguistic evidence that the origins of the word abracadabra found in Hebrew and Aramaic could indeed refer to the Trinity and a blessing. See below.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abracadabra......81911.29 Of course, there are arguments to the contrary, but the Hebrew/Aramaic origin argument could be used as interesting patter.

It's funny that this is a debate, when all too often in church we repeat formula prayers, and "magic words" like "in Jesus name Amen". Now before you pick up stones, I know that we are to ask in His name, but we can have a tendancy to fall into rote repitition which makes me question how this differs from an incantation? As Christians we are the most free of all people, yet we return to our chains of legalism and works. Grace, what a beautiful word. So repeat after me the magic words, "There aint no magic words!"

A personal opinion, but I avoid the use of magic words and magic wands in my ministry show. ( I use a wand when I'm loading a silk into the vanishing candle, but that is behind the scenes.)

Sorry if I sounded judgemental, I am just saying that when we forget what we are doing and rely on rote repetition, are we really praying or are we just chanting a rote repetion which does not sit far from the idea of "magic words" because what we are doing no longer is a matter of the heart but a hope that the words will do something.
Wow that was a horrible run on sentance. Maybe an incantation of some sort. By the way I have nothing against praying in Jesus name it is biblical. This may ruffle some feathers but as Christians we don't believe in magic words. The power of the toungue is through meaning. Before Christ I studied transendental meditation, and other eastern mystic faiths. They believe in the magical powers of montras and incantations. This is nonsense. The power of words lies in deception or truth. The Spirit works in truth and the spirits work through deception. The battlefield for our souls is the mind. With this in mind, I would agree with the posters who advise a comical brushing aside of magic words or the avoiding of them. Not because they have power, but with children we may imply that they do. |
