Mr. Ortiz,
First like everyone else, I want to thank you for being so generous with your time these past few days. I'm a huge fan and have nearly all of your books. Now my question. Since you go through so many new decks, I wonder if you can discuss the process you go through when preparing a new deck for the faro shuffle. I find that I can faro a deck quite easily after it has worn in for a while, but with a new deck, the faro often sticks, with the weave not meshing easily. I've tried rubbing the ends of the deck to remove any spurs, but still until the deck is fairly worn in, I do have trouble with the weave. I know that Elmsley would sandpaper his decks, which I've never been able to duplicate. What is your technique. Also my biggest problem with the faro is two cards sticking together somewhere in the middle but otherwise the weave is fine. Any recommnedations that would help avoid this problem? |

Bill:
I never do anything to prepare or break in a deck. I open a new deck and start performing with it. I have no problems faroing a freshly opened deck. (Many magicians who have seen me lecture can attest to this.) Like anything else, this simply comes from practice. Therefore, I can’t offer you any guidance in breaking in cards. Perhaps some other Café members can pass along tips that have worked for them. Sincerely, Darwin Ortiz |

I've always been told that giving a deck 8 faros just after you open is the way to go. Apparently this 'faro trains' the deck and iwll make it more susceptible to the move. It's also a good way of finding out if the deck isn't particularly suited to faroing.
Of course the most practice you do the less you'll find this occurs.

Some new decks are easier for faro while some are not.It is just the problem of 'feeling'.That means you have to get the 'feeling' of varied kinds of new decks.

The Complete Works of Alex Elmsley vol. 2 offers 2 tips for preparing a deck for easy faroing. He also makes an observation about English vs. US cards. Anyone wishing to do faro work should own this book, so I direct you there.
