Does anyone have an idea for teaching about the BIBLICAL Hell (Lake of fire, eternal separation from God, etc)? (as opposed to the annecdotal hell of certain denominations or secularism-not devil with red tail and horns, pitchfork, etc)
John 3:16

Well, I have perhaps the SEED of an idea. Recently I've enjoyed my family's reactions to the simple little trick where a quarter is pushed through a sheet of rubber stretched over a glass.
It's in the Klutz Book of Magic and is also marketed as "The Best Dam Trick Ever." ("Dam" having nothing to do with "Damn." The sheets of rubber just happen to be called rubber dams.) I have sometimes just jokingly referred to the coin's being "cast into outer darkness," or "into the pit." I bet we could come up with something about the one coin being saved from that while the other one goes in. The way the rubber "dam" forms a barrier between the two should be good for something, too. If you decide to work out the DETAILS of a good patter and presentation for this, please share it! ------Jim |

Hi,
I use a simple trick using paper folding and cuttings and make a cross and the word "hell." I think this trick is on Karl Fulves' Self Working Paper Tricks book, but add another cut to the other part of papers and then arrange the word hell from those paper pieces. When I do that I talk about following Jesus or go to the hell. Hope this help. Regards, Oops, I'm sorry! I gave you the wrong reference book. It is not in Karl Fulves's book but in Dunninger's Complete Encyclopedia of Magic page 51. It is very clear how to, so you don't need to add another cut. But you still need to create a patter. In my opinion, it is better to represent a
"choice" than to try to represent a biblical version of Hell. In the close of my act that I am working on now (but have not scripted the patter to yet), I have a "torch to rose" story boarded in. I plan on lighting it during the closing remarks, with a "the choice is yours" ending. The show is themed with the "greatest love story ever told" and very loosely based on Duane's act that he describes in the book, "Greater Gospel Magic," although the props that I'm using are for the most part different ones. At this point in time the props are in a half circle in the spare bedroom, and the act is literally being drawn out in frames like a cartoon. The overall theme is threaded through the act, as well as a couple comedy effects, a simple escape, and a closing illusion (much thanks to Harry Murphy) that is guaranteed to be remembered. The torch to rose will be presented when I thank the crowd for coming and remind them of the choice. I was thinking of including the Hell senario, but it doesn't fit the act.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

Here's what I always do and it seems to work for me.
I do the old card to wallet, saying that if I fail to find the chosen card I will give the spectator all the money in my wallet. I then "fail" to find the card, and bring out my wallet (which is an El Duco fire wallet) and WHOOSH!! the flames blow up right in his face. That puts the fear of Christ into them and teaches them not to choose the path of evil (money). |

Where can I find this El Duco Wallet?

In adition to the El Ducco Wallet, you can also look for Kapps on Fire Wallet. I love mine.
Or use a Fire book for a similar effect. And I agree that it is hard to teach a Biblical visual image of hell. But since Hell is the Eternal separation from God, you never really have to go to the fire. You can go into any torn and restored effect and not only show separation (torn), but Grace, through the restoration. BroDavid

Rent or buy the deluxe 2 DVD set of DOGMA. One of the deleted scenes features the Demon Bartlby giving a perfect description of hell.

However that movie is very controversal, and I would not be caught dead showing that in front of a class or church. (Whatever.)

I know this is an older topic, but it caught my attention -
Remember there is more to a literal hell than just fire. Separation from God is the main characteristic. There is also darkness, falling, being eaten by worms, torment of memory, loneliness, the aspect of time, drowning, terror, noise, thirst, and sinful desires. Often times, many of these characteristics are overlooked. With these others, it may help you come up with some other applications for tricks/routines/patter. Hope it helps.

Heaven and Hell are the exact same place. It is an exquisite dinning hall where a sumptuous banquet has been laid before the guests but all of the utensils are ten feet long.
In Hell everyone is trying to feed themselves. In Heaven everyone is feeding each other. Here endith the lesson

OK, I'm rather new here, so I may be wrong, but -
Before I go off on Payne for being dead wrong in his post, I must say I am bothered by it for other reasons as well. This post is absolutely unhelpful. (I am restraining myself as much as possible here). As for some more thought on the actual subject - Maybe there are some routines that show the flip side as well? For example (simply) here's an illustration/illusion of how bad Hell is, now here's an illustration/illusion of how wonderful Heaven is (something beyond our comprehension in both cases). It just reminds me of an old song "Oh that will be glory for me."
