Just let it go, you gave your opinion, and anyone that reads it, can make up their own mind whether it has any merit. The Rose Water and alcohol is a famous solution that many top pros used over the ages. You want to call our famous magicians that we all owe so much to for leaving information for us to build on a joke. Attacking members and telling them to get out of magic is not the way to make people listen to you. Comments like that are only made by Trolls and bullies. It make you sound weak, and insecure. |

Bill to the rescue! Good one Bill! I never said using product was unacceptable. Nor did I bash anyone for using it. And you are absolutely right, some sweat more than others and its a PH thing, nothing to do with confidence or humidity. But if you are rubbing your hands with lotions and powders, that combined with sweat, wouldn't that make your hands goopy and worse off?

Nick, being you never use the mentioned hand treatments, you don't know how they react. No they don't make your hands goopy, some of the over the counter products may when you use to much. They make feel like you have sand paper on your hands. I don't know how you can be against something when you have never experienced it.
You make up situations, then argue against them. What is that all about. Like the mirror comment, did someone say they practiced all the time in front of mirror. I did not read any comments like that. This the 2015, more and more people are using video. You see, I talk from experience. I don't have to make up a scenarios to hear myself talk, like some members. |

I have used most of the product mentioned here. But it doesn't matter. nothing does. Speaking from experience is fine, yet you have no recent footage of yourself. Its all good.

Neither do you Nick W. Use your real name, and give some facts about yourself and where you are from. And if you have old for recent footage of yourself, why not post it.

Don't know what set you off to attack me, just because you don't know how magician's hand lotions feel on the hands. Just stay in the dark, you seem to like it their. |

When I lived in North Texas my hands were so dry I could not handle cards. I started using Chamberlain's oil (someone here on the Café recommended it). It worked great for me. Now that I live in SE Asia my skin is no longer dried out and I don't need anything for handling cards

There is a product at office supply stores ( looks like a compact case ) which is used when dealing through sleeves of papers. Gives a slight tackiness to the skin but leaves no residue. Nice before a card or coin set

I believe the active tack ingredient in these lotions is glycerin. I just bought a bottle of glycerin in the hand lotion section of a local drug store. Use any hand lotion or sanitizer you like and just add glycerin to your liking. I do a squirt of sanitizer in my hand then I add a drop or two of glycerin and in about 30 seconds I'm good to go. I actually need nothing else besides glycerin and literally just a drop or two at that. It is fun to mix and match lotions and sanitizers and then just put another drop or two of glycerin in your hands. You can even water glycerin down for a spray bottle but for me spray bolltles are a hassle because you have to cap and recap and if you lose the cap you really cannot pack it because it will get other items wet or oily. With lotions the caps are usually the type that are attached to the container and you just have to flip them; i.e. you really cannot lose the lid unless you lose the container itself. AND although a 3 or 4 ounce bottle of glycerin all ready costs much less ($6 or $7) than all the recommended lotions at 2 drops per use it goes a lot farther!!!

Salim, you have not researched what you are suggesting, there is 2 other ingredients that need to be mixed with the glycerin, and there is a health reason for them. One is alcohol, for sanitary reasons, for the glycerin, and the other is rose water. Just using glycerin, could cause health issues.
Even it you have been doing something for years, that does not make it good advice when it comes to issues like this. Unless you are a medial chemist, are you? |

Thank you for your post. I looked it up on WebMD and it appears that additives in all lotions can cause allergic reactions. Also, it is possible that glycerin can cause rashes like any other lotion too if the person has a sensitivity. I have not checked my bottle but I am sure there is the standard warning that says something like "don't use if this gives you a rash" or irritates your skin which applies to all lotions whether for palming or not. I was not aware of any health issues. Please tell me about the health issues you know of. This is very important to know. Thanks.

I use O'Keeffes working hands creme. I use it before bed and wash my hands in the morning. It does a great job

I live in a dry climate, and have dry skin that cracks in the winter when heat is running at most places. My fingers can get really slick, to the point that I've had coins in fingertip rest position skate off them as though they were the physicist's proverbial friction-less surface. I've been using Corn Huskers for years. It helps with the dryness and can give a little much-needed tack, but I find that it doesn't last long. I'll try some of the other lotions when I get a chance. I've found that standard lotions such as Jergens and Eurcerin don't help me much in the way of tackiness.
It was mentioned to try adding glycerin to Corn Huskers. Glycerin is already one of the main ingredients, judging by its place in the ingredient list. That's just as an FYI, I'm not saying that adding it won't make it better. I haven't tried it, but will if I can find my bottle of glycerin. It's probably hanging around with my jugs of nitric and sulfuric acid. Ben |

Looking for good a good grip product, you are not looking for tackiness, but gritty or roughness to hold the coin, ball, or thimble, etc. Tackiness will only get all over your props, and make them sticky and increase the problem.
Golfer's grip lotion is what one should be looking for, it make the hands gritty or sandy feeling. Glycerin does he same thing, but should not be used alone. |

Papercreme, which has been mentioned, and Take Hold Finger Tip Moistener, which comes in a disk shaped container about the diameter of a jumbo coin maybe 1/2" think...I was looking at a picture of Skinner's, and it appears to be the same shape and size as the Take Hold...Sortkwik's container looks the same, too...
While the amount of water has remained static, the amount of Tequila and Triple Sec available for making Margaritas has expanded enormously. So you see, we have made progress after all. ~Anonymous

So glad I found this thread. I always have had a major problem in winter with dry hands causing an inability to grip the cards.
I tried O'Keefe's Working Hands (hand cream)based on a few folks recommending it in this discussion. Works great!! Gives the hands a waxy feel and not greasy at all. And so nothing rubs off on to the cards. Thanks again. |

I don't know what happened to my post on this subject....seems to have evaporated.
I was a Regular Member of the Magic Castle when living in So. Calif.., 1965 and later. I had the pleasure of meeting and knowing Dai Vernon. During this period a small group of "Can't get enuf of this magic stuff" guys would occasionally meet in the lounge area of The Magic Castle. Dai Vernon was always there (it was rumored that he had an apartment on the upper floors of the bldg.) talking magic, offering advise and just shooting the bull in general. It was a wonderful opportunity and one that I did not realize the significance of until years later. Any way, one incident that sticks in my mind was the discussion re "dry" hands. So Ca in semi arid and almost a desert save for the water pumped in from north of LA (al la "China Town" starring Jack Nicholson). Mr. Vernon suggested glycerin and in my naive state I quipped "Oh, I'm going to get some of that!" At which point Mr. Veron practically chastised me stating "What for? You don't need it!" I was only 30/31 at that the time so dry hands was not really a problem, I just wanted to be like the Master, and he was correct, I did not suffer dry hands. Now fast forward (I mean a supersonic speed) I am 82 and do now need it. I use one drop and one drop only as recommended by D.V. It will last for about on hour. Sooooo, there's no need for any expensive stuff, just one drop of glycerin will do the trick and one bottle is probably all you will ever need for a lifetime. |
