Any thoughts on piracy? Is there a good side (IE more people being exposed to your agic)? Does the bad (reduced sales) outweigh the good?
Some may argue that if you hate on piracy because it impacts sales (which is totally fair and legitimate), then you're only creating magic to make money, as opposed to the love of the art. Any comments/thoughts? |

Hey man,
My thoughts on piracy have certainly changed over the years, and I am certainly not as against it as I once was. In fact, I think piracy has helped MAKE certain magicians celebrities. I have come to firmly believe that those who will steal will steal, and those who will buy will buy. Piracy has essentially replaced borrowing from a friend or renting. I know many people, (a good friend of mine Cary is a prime example) of people who pirate almost everything, but STILL purchase the stuff that is worth purchasing. This is a MASSIVE discussion, and I doubt we have the time or the space to continue this discussion, as this is my last day here. We can try though! Keep the questions coming! |

I know that, at least for me, I learn about a LOT of magic via word-of-mouth. (As opposed to seeing a listing in a commercial publication, store, website, whatever.) Usually, it's a matter of "hey, check out what I found". Diamonds in the rough, so to speak.
I definitely agree that people should be prevented from distributing your material. Have you ever considered giving a whole effect away for free? Adding it to the torrent sites, YouTube, etc? |
