My son wants to know what magicians and books inspired you when you were first starting out.
Thank you.

I answered the magician one on a separate thread (your son should take a look at old Steve Martin stuff and Joel Hodgson's magic act from the 1980's to see what I like).
For illusion books I like everything by Jim Steinmeyer and Paul Osborne. Steinmeyer shows you how a really clever and knowledgeable person thinks. Osborne shows how to build things in a practical way. I really liked the "Trick Brain" by Fitzke. This shows how to creatively problem and come up with solutions. "Showmanship for Magicians" by Henning Nelms shows us that a proper magician should be as well-trained in the art of theatre as any serious stage actor. An important lesson that is sadly neglected. A theatrical background doesn't mean you have to have a tux, a cane and a monocle. Quite the opposite. It shows you how to use your body and mind to sell yourself. I also strongly recommend any magician or show business biography he can get his hands onto. |
