Hello all,
This is my first post in this forum, although I have been around the other areas of this wonderful site of a while now. I have always thought about spreading the word of God with magic, but didn't know where to start. I had an idea that I would love to use, but I am in need of your help. I love Sponge Balls and wanted to do a gospel routine with them. My idea was to start with one or two balls, and end with a giant sponge heart, telling about Gods love for all people. I am stuck on what to do with the rest of the routine. As this will be my first Gospel routine, I don't really know where to go from knowing that God has called me to use the skills I have learned to spread his Word. Thank you all. God be with you, Danton

Hi Danton,
Check out Duane Laflin's Greater Gospel Magic. Someone on the Café has one for sale. It's worth every penny you pay for it. Duane will teach you about the why and how of gospel magic. I think he gives a very good explanation and has some excellent advice. Of course others here have good advice as well. Pastor Terry and others are using magic to share the gospel full time so you may want to PM them directly. In fact, you may want to do a search on this site first. This question has been asked a few times - how to get started in gospel magic. Sponge balls are a fun way to break the ice with people and warm them up to you. It's interactive, fun, shows skill, and helps you connect with the spectators. I would use it to get people's attention and get them involved with you. Not every trick you do has to have a 'gospel message' attached to it. Entertain and if people are enjoying your magic, you will have earned the right to be heard. I like your idea of ending with a sponge heart. The surprise appearance of the heart would give you the opportunity to say something like, "Who can tell me what hearts represent? Love? Yes, good answer. Love. Whenever I see a heart like this one, it reminds me that God wants us to show love to one another. What are some tangible ways people can show love?...." That's just one way off the top of my head that you can go with it. It would work well as a lead-in to a teaching on the topic of love. But I wouldn't start off with speaking of God's love first, when trying to share the gospel to someone. A good presentation on how to effectively share the gospel can be found at http://www.wayofthemaster.com God bless you, Joe |

Thanks Joe,
Like I said I don't know how to start, so thank you for your advice. I wouldn't have to use that as an opener, but I do think I would like to use it somewhere. Also, thanks for that link. I'll also see if that video is still for sale here on the Café. Danton

I just noticed I said video, then realized Greater Gospel Magic is a book.

Danton -
Here is my suggestion. I'd like to demonstrate how love is such an important part of the Christian experience. To do this I have two balls...one for you (give one to the spectator) and one for me. Now here’s what we are going to do. Hold the ball in your closed hand and I'll do the same. The Bible tells us to love one another. So we will demonstrate that. Ready? Did you feel it? Well open your hand. Yes, our balls have changed places....well from your silence (or laughter...depending on the response)...I can see you are not that impressed. You know the Bible talks about in Luke chapter 6 that if you show love for those who love you…it really isn’t impressive. And apparently, I’ve been able to effectively demonstrate that. However, it goes on to say that when we love those who are our enemies…well that is when we get a reward from above. See (take the two balls and switch them for the heart and put them in the spectators hand) when you and I are willing to show love for those who are mean to us, who do us wrong, who try to harm us, we are doing something that is hard for the world to understand. Because we are not showing “our love” but His love through us. (have them open their hand and reveal the heart) And that is a whole lot more impressive…don’t you think? Bible reference: Luke 6:32-36 32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (Then the Luke gives the famous line…judge not less you be judged so maybe you can find something to do with that. Perhaps a torn and restored effect…about tearing others down with judgment or something.) Kif

Thanks FX4Christ,
That is a lot like what I had in mind. Maybe I'll get to use it someday. Danton

Hi Kif,
...I forgot you joined The Magic Café, or else I would have said, "Let's ask Kif". Your ideas are always excellent, Kif. Thanks for chiming in. Now I need to go purchase a sponge heart.... |

Hey Great Danton...My ministry was headquartered out of Lenoir, NC a few moons ago. When I decided to do Gospel magic, I did not even realize, nor had I ever seen anyone doing it. But I began to think of the truth that I wanted to teach and then figured out which trick would best illustrate that. Like Peanutbutter and Jelly effect, I talk about Jesus trading places with us.
You need to figure out what venue you want to do Gospel magic. Do you want to do object lessons for Sunday School or Children's Church. Do you want to do Kid's Krusades? Or regular shows that weaves the Gospel message throughout. So first step is figure out what God wants you to do, if you don't know that, then it's hard to know what direction to go after that. Also, always let it be from the heart. If I can be of any help, feel free to PM me. |

Terry,
I used to live in Lenoir, but that was a while ago (10 years or so). Funny world isn't it? I would very much like to do children's church (I love kids), and at my church they always need people to help them. That would probably be one of the first places I would share with. I do, however, do a lot of just kind of random street magic that I want to be able to share the Gospel through (I don't plan on just walking up to someone and doing Gospel magic, I always talk to people first though, and see if they are interested, or if they are Christians, etc.). Thanks for your help Terry, I'm sure I will be in need of it again! Joe, I found a large red sponge at a $ store, that I cut to shape with scissors. Hmm...maybe I could get some of the sponge used in the growing sponge ball effect, and use that.... <3 Thanks guys, you have helped me so much, and inspired me to continue learning about the amazing art of Gospel magic. Small world, I left Lenoir in 1991 or 92...and I'm glad that Joe and I encouraged you. Joe is a great guy, wonderful Brother in the Lord and we need more like him around here.
Be Blessed! Terry |

Gosh, thanks Pastor Terry. You're too kind.
Danton, Pastor Terry has LOTS of experience in performing gospel magic as he is a full time seasoned professional. You may want to use the search engine on The Café and look for past posts from Terry Owens. He generously shares lots of excellent information on gospel magic. Also check out his website. He has many TV clips of him performing. It may give you some ideas too. Although Kif is new to The Magic Café, he's not new to magic. He's been performing for years, performed at The Magic Castle, and has written about gospel magic. Kif's posts on The Café are always worth reading. Search for FX4Christ. He seems to have a never-ending flow of great ideas. I'm blessed to connect with him each month at our Fellowship of Christian Magician's meetings. Best to you Danton. |

Pastor Terry,
You left Lenoir when I was born! (91), I would have still in GA at the time. Thanks Joe, I'll search for posts from these great members. I wish I had known I should do this before, there is a youth rally I'm going to tonight, and I would have liked to have had something ready. There's always next time, right? God Bless, Danton

Gee thanks Joe...and ohhhhhh you make me feel soooo old there Danton...lol. I was all over North Carolina and became a good friend with Bill McLaury (who was featured on the front cover of the Linking Ring this year). I was starting to go pretty strong in magic around your age performing wise. Rick Fisher, owner of FAB magic was my biggest rival. We were in the newspaper getting free promos on a regular basis.
A word of encouragement for you Danton, always strive to be the best you can be and strive for the highest caliber of performance you can give. We share the most precious message and so our presentations should rival any of the pros. Be blessed! |

I tend to make people feel old, or short. lol (6'3" at 16)
Thanks for the words of encouragement Terry. I feel that although I think I always try to do my best (Boy scout, it's a habit), I should try harder when performing to share the Word of God. Thankfully, I now live in Stokes county (a hole in the wall of North Carolina), and there aren't many magicians around (pros anyway). I have met one other person who was in to magic, but not at a professional level. I am now seeing how effects can turned into gospel messages every time I see something done. I think this is a good sign...Thanks guys. Best wishes, Danton

I've never been to Lenoir, and I don't much care for grits... can we still be friends?

Haha..I don't see why not mrtricky! Everyone is welcome into the house. To tell you the truth, I'm one of the few southern boys I know that doesn't care much for grits. I like oatmeal much better. =D
By the way, have you had snow out there in Denver yet? I wish it would snow here...it sends such a magical feeling with it.

I grew up in the Boston area, and I love grits, especially with cheese. (I don't buy "grits," I just make them from cornmeal, yellow or white, don't matter.)
Kif, thanks for the excellent presentation. Like Joe, I have to go and purchase a sponge heart ... just when I thought I had enough stuff for a while.
