I recently purchased one of the aged Bicycle decks I believe they are called series1800 decks. Here are my first thoughts on a routine.
A brand new deck of cards is presented and the magician tells the audience he is going to take them back in time to show them some ancient classic bit of magic (or whatever). An old clock is set on the table and as the magician begins to tell his story the hands on the clock start spinning backwards. The new deck in the magician’s hands begins to change into the old aged, weathered deck. Now I’m stuck, this is where I need some ideas. Where to go from here? It has some neat theatric possibilities. I am not opposed to a humorous angle either. Ideas for the backward spinning clock are needed too. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or input! Steven |

Im going to make one into an invisible deck. With a deck switch and an optical illusion ring. Im going to put together an effect that was just in Magic magazine recently. An article about dealing with tweens, I think it was.

You can do a couple of tricks, then state that everything was just a illusion, then show that the deck is actually brand new

Hi Steven,
I do not use these decks for magic work, but I always have 1 of these cards in my wallet as a prediction card. Hmmmmm, not a genuine card, but a Hofzinser See-thru-card! http://www.magicbycardmaker.com/mediapoo....../HFZ.jpg Show 'em the card from the back, let them touch it and display its back in front of light: a 8C (example) is seen thru. In fact it is a 7D. Always great reactions!

I have also used one of the cards as a prediction card and it plays very nice.

If you are going for Theatric then have a special costume outfit to do a subtle, but effective quick change into a Riverboat Gambler. Come up with a story about a poker game in a Old West saloon. Throw in details about maybe one of the dance hall girls getting in the game. A story about lady luck. Do some dialect changes to sell the performance with a different accent. It'd be nice if the clock could change visually also. -Shoop |

When I mentioned theatrical I was thinking primarily of a close-up or table side effect but still… a partial costume change could be very cool, nice story line with the Riverboat Gambler too! Great ideas Shoop, thanks! I’m still searching for a clock that can run backwards, so far no leads really so I am going to buy a cheap clock and see if I can’t make it myself. I really think the 1800 deck is a great item with great creative possibilities. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and ideas I’m keeping track of them. Steven |

If you are familiar with Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, then you may find something of interest here. Use a standard Bike deck and let one of the Jacks be the picture of Dorian, which ages as a result of Dorian's behaviour (change standard Jack into Series 1800 Jack). Eventually, everything around him (ie. all the other cards) also turn old and grey (the rest of the deck changes). The second change is admittedly not consistent with the plot of the novel but I think it's an angle worth thinking about.
The only thing that prevents me from doing this myself is that I need a good, robust colour changing deck routine where not only the back but also the front of the cards change colour. Thoughts or suggestions, anyone? |

Your observation is of course correct.... and I realise that my post was unclear.... I thought of Dorian Gray as a standalone presentation idea, completely independent from the "turning back the time" theme of the previous posts.... sorry for any confusion....

Pegasus and I discussed using one of the 1800 cards as a prediction, as well.
Produce an old, worn envelope with an old postmark that is addressed to you from your great, great grandfather. Inside is a vintage playing card he sent you before he passed way. Or, it's an antique playing card purchased from the estate of the late Harry Blackstone Sr., who used the card in a prediction effect, which you will try to recreate. Robert |

The old time travel paradox… but this is; Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away and when you travel back in time everything around you gets old. ;o) That’s the beauty of making up a story we can make up the rules too ;o) And the Dorian Gray idea is great as well being a portrait artist myself I might be able to do something neat with the art as an additional prop. Great ideas everyone thanks! Steven |

Open a brand new Bicycle deck. Have the spectator select and sign a card and place it back into the deck. Tell him or her you just traveled into the future so you would see what card they would select, then came back to reveal it. But you messed up and accidentally went back too far. Then go through the deck to reveal their signed card, which is now aged.

Just had an idea for a routine involving 1800's based on the Back To The Future films. Start with a standard bicycle deck, then as you travel back in time it becomes an 1800 deck. On the way back to the present something goes wrong and you end up in the future and the cards change accordingly (to clear bikes or other futuristic design). Finally you return to the present day and the bikes return to normal. In each time slot you demonstrate one or two tricks from that age.
What do you think?

Lots of great presentational ideas in this thread - excellent food for thought. On a more practical note, I am still searching for colour changing deck routines that can accommodate the 1800's - (i) both back and front must change; (ii) the cards do not have a white border; and (iii) the cards look different from the side. Any ideas for routines that can deal with these constraints? Thanks!

I like to use this deck with Heirloom to do a Koran style kind of deck. You deal through the cards and they call stop and it matches the card photographed with your Great Uncle Charlie.
