I've been away, but I'm glad to have made it here the last day of our salute to Mr. Wakeman.
Randy - I want to know about the effects that give you the most pleasure TO PERFORM: a) The sleight of hand effect that just "feels right" and is personally satisfying, and... b) The easy effect that makes you feel guilty when you do it, but you HAVE to do it because it gets such a strong reaction. Forgive me if these have been covered already. |

Hi David,
a) I have an affection for multiple selection routines, such as "The Formula One Card Routine." It gets everyone involved . . . not just by watching generic eye candy, nor by living the experience vicariously through the reactions of an audience representative. You are magically finding THEIR card, and though the other members of the audience may thoroughly enjoy it as well-- you are doing it "just" for them. I believe they can feel that. b)David, I was able to get past the feeling guilty part long ago! "Card Under Glass" continually and consistently gets gasps and screams of delight . . . and, I'm sure not working very hard-- for THAT level of reaction. |

Randi, do you use the original handling of "card under glass"?
And what do you think of some of the variations?

I started working behind the bar, peforming with "Heba Haba" Al Andrucci when I about seventeen. So, I would say that the way I perform it is certainly patterned after the "Heba Haba way."
Many so-called "variations" are nothing but, as Heba Haba himself handled the routine in divergent ways. I will mention Mike Close's extended routine as a notable exception. It is one that is VERY effective, and while perhaps a bit long for behind the bar . . . plays just great for Mike-- especially when performed tableside or other more relaxed surroundings. |
