Hi,
I've noticed on a lot people's websites, they have pictures of them performing "in the trenches" in live situations with clients, celebrities, etc. I was wandering, how do people get these pictures? I never ask people to start taking pictures of me with their guests. How have people got hold of the pictures? Cheers, Nick |

I either hire a photographer or siege the opportunity when someone else is taking pictures by handing them my card with my email address and asking them to send me some of their favorites.
This is becoming more and more difficult all the time with all of the legalities involved. I hired a photographer to take pictures of me doing a school show a while back. In order to get permission from the school, we had to agree not to take any photos of the audience. Then, when it came time to get a helper on stage, I had to ask the teachers, who had a list of their students with permission to get their pictures taken, to send me their pick. I will never do this again, as I ended up with kids I would not have chosen, and it didn’t make a particularly good picture either. This is another reason to thank the kiddie porn people for making life more difficult for all of us.

I've always used staged events for my publicity photos. I'll plan a promotional party, say to celebrate my performance character's birthday or a PTA/Library party, then invite families from my client list for the free meal and celebration. The invitations make it clear that this is a promotional event, and their participation grants implied consent to use all photos and videos taken in future promotions. The legality depends on individual state laws, so check first.

A lot of times when I send my Thank You letter, I ask if anyone took pictures I could use on my website. I get a lot of shots that way, and these days, with email and digital cameras, it is even easier.
I have no problem with releases because I tell people up front the pictures are for my website.

I do new photos about every 2 years. I really recommend using a professional photographer and not just a guy with a camera. I use a photographer from a newspaper. They are great at getting action shots. I go to the restaurant I work at on a night off and approach a few diners. I perform for them, and he snaps the shots. Make sure you have them sign releases so you can use the photos on your website/promo kit.

Even though they may agree upfront, if they see it on your site or wherever, they may not like the photo (as many people do) and want it taken down. It's not a big deal to draw something up. Scott Sullivan is a member of this board and an expert on these things, and I'm sure he'll be able to give you an example. |

As a graphic designer, I have to use photo release forms all the time in my line of work. Whenever I am on a photo shoot for my job or for any freelance work I do, I must carry them with me. They do not have to be all that involved, but they do need to carry with it certain information. The idea is to just be honest and upfront with people, and they usually are fine with it. I also offer them the chance that I can and will send them copies of the pictures if they want, so that they can have them to enjoy as well. Since I take most everything with a very high-end digital SLR camera set up, the photos come out great and sending them via email is really easy and simple.
Here is a sample release form that I have used at my jobs in the past that works rather well. It is 100% legal and covers all the bases. It can be tweaked to meet certain needs. MODEL RELEASE FORM: For valuable consideration received, I hereby grant to (your name), and his or her legal representatives ad assigns, the irrevocable and unrestricted right to use and publish photographs of me, or in which I may be included, for editorial trade, advertising, and any other purpose and in any number and medium; and to alter the same without restriction. I hereby release photographer (or your name) and his or her legal representatives and assigns from all claims and liability to said photographs. Name: Address: City: Sate: Zip: Phone: Email: Now if you are using a child in the shots, you will want to add in a few lines and have the parent sign for the child. Add a parent or guardian signature line and the fact that the parent and/or guardian agrees to the terms above. Hope this helps. Kyle

I like candid shots of people having fun with me, so all of the many pictures on my web site are of me and party-goers laughing. A professional photographer can not get the spontaneity of a candid shot. Of course there are a lot of throw aways, but the ones I have say this guy will be fun to have at our house.

I need to have some done. So many I have seen taken of me I wish now I had given my card out to have them emailed. Some nice looking cameras also.
