I witnessed blatant exposure by a magician while he was working at a trade show. I don't know if he is a member of the SAM or not. I have a thread here:

Greetings,
Rick, exposure of any type always saddens me and deeply concerns me. It would be very important to find out whether or not the individual in question is a member of either IBM, SAM or both and present the situation to the proper people within each group; in the case of the SAM, this should be submitted to Warren Kaps, Esq. kapsmagic@earthlink.net and to Marc de Sousa fkaps@aol.com, these two gentlemen are the ethics co-chairs. Thank you for pointing it out and please do submit your complaint and comments in writing to the above referenced. Keep a dream in the making Maria Ibanez President Society of American Magicians |

The topic link no longer exists.
This is a performer based here in San Francisco, so I'd be interested. Any further information? Thanks, Walt |

Hi All,
I followed the link to the performer's website and found tons of promotional mater including videos. But I didn't find the clip in question where he exposes sleights like the Ascanio spread to set up the audience for another effect. How do I find that clip so I can see what all the discussion is about? Thanks, Tony |

Go to this page: http://www.firemagic.com/video/index.html
Scroll down to the 4th video (caption below video is "Trade Shows"). This is the routine in question.

Thanks Rick,
I agree it's exposure and is ethically wrong, but it's done very fast and followed up by another effect, I don't think the damage to other magicians is really extensive. That is, few people will retain the details. The entire presentation including the ace assembly is apt to blend into a blob of information that is ill remembered. A good magician could certainly follow him and fool the pants off the same audience. Thanks for the link. Tony |

It's definitely ego. Just a performer showing (exposing) a lay audience his technical abilities to reassure himself that he is a good performer vs. utilizing and honing his artistic abilities as the focal point.

Personally, I don't respect the actions that the SAM has taken on exposure!
Year's back when there was outrage about Mac King's exposure on national television on World's Greatest Magic (including at least 1 item that was NOT in public domain), the SAM requested the resignation of the executive producer of the show, Gary Ouellet from the SAM. He complied, his letter was published on the Broken Wand's (obituary) page of MUM (what was stated later to have been an oversight, but at the time, looked to be in poor taste). The SAM later "hired" Mac King to perform at national conventions. Mixed message, huh? |

It appears to me that Paul's exposure routine was an attempt to parody Penn and Teller's Clear Cups and Balls Exposure, this time with cards. Penn and Teller would expose all the moves of this classic effect. The C&Bs went so quickly and was flawlessly executed that the spectators could still not understand the moves, but were duly impressed. You might say Paul's routine was exposure with precedence. By the way, P&T were subject to the same scrutiny years ago.
