Seams as though there are clearly a few schools of though going on here.

One that says “Find Out Why Your Target Buyers WANT, need and desire and (assuming you can) Deliver that solution to them!” Which is to say that you could develop something that people already WANT need or desire and you will have a market of buyers to reward you for your solution… (again. Assuming it IS the solution your target buyer truly wants and is willing to pay for based on your marketing, solution an offering process, of course.)

Is that the ONLY way?

NOPE!

Not by a loooong shot… And thank God for that as well!

There is another school of thought that is equally valid that says “Create A Business/Solution/Market out what no one else is offering or doing or in a market that no-one else is serving/supporting and CREATE your market!"

DUH!

BOTH (and more) each have their own unique advantages and disadvantages… no ONE is 100% right for every situation nor is any one always wrong.

We all know this… OBVIOUSLY there are several, even many offering a very successful “Nutrition” program regardless of the “BS”, (Belief System) even when there is PROOF to the contrary that suggests that “no one will buy it” or that “there is no market” since it has already been well established that many already are successful in the industry!

Where they an “instant” success?

Maybe, maybe not, but they made it work anyway and like I said, Thank God they DID cuz NOW we all gain the benefit of their time, talent and treasured investments/inroads to a market that maybe wouldn’t have or didn’t exist before they just, plane “did it anyway”!

Hey, if we listened to all the nay-sayers who told us “It Couldn’t Be Done” or that something was impossible, we would ALL be in a worse state of market possibilities that we are right now!

I’m sure MOST of us have ‘created’ market that formally didn’t exist n our relative markets… I know that I have more times that not. (You are welcome for that as well! Hehehehe!)

Hey, there had to be “THE FIRST” tradeshow, birthday party, restaurant… etc professional in each market, and up until that point I’m sure someone told them “it couldn’t be done or was not worth pursuing…” and yet, here we are today! Thank God they had the passion, tenacity, or maybe just enough stupidity to do it anyway and open a market that we all now benefit from… looks like a win, win, win to me!

Just some thoughts…

I am at your service and in HIS Service,

Robert,

Then are you saying that unless a magician is also a professional in the specific field he should not be able to / would not be able to, convey a message to a specific audience using the medium of magic and entertainment??? As example:

Math show
Nutrition
Space
Bullying
Reading

etc., etc.

"Because my guess is it takes more than just magic or a puppet saying to eat your vegetables."

Probably not. LOLO In my work with my safety show I get continuous feedback on the amazing retention of the show's key messages by my young audiences. Why, because the "rules" are woven into the show/effects/story and the children seem to absorb the information/message more readily when presented in an entertaining, magical manner.

For my show, I did research with the appropriate professionals (both law enforcement and medical), and then took my experience as a parent and incorporated the points that I deemed the most important and added the magic. I also have an inner conviction on the importance of safety rules etc. so maybe this also comes out in my performance?

I would like to think that a person who is capable in conveying a specific message to an audience would not actually have to be a specialist in the field. Should they answer questions, or act as an authority I would like to think then that they should have an education in the subject at hand.

ie. I may tell children to not open a gate to a closed pool area, or climb a fence to get in, but I certainly wouldn't give the building info to a parent on how to construct a suitable fence or barrier.

You actually did the leg work and research for your program. Okay fine.

I'm talking about someone who goes and buys a nutrition program, and all of the sudden they're qualified to talk to kids about nutrition.

B.S.

If you're talking to my kid at school about health and nutrition, you'd better have some background in it. Buying another one of these success peddler programs doesn't make one an expert in my childs health.

If you want to teach my kid to say no to drugs, or how to deal with bullies, okay fine. But health and medically related stuff, the line gets crossed by some chump looking to make a buck at the expense of my child.

And that's wrong no matter what the success gurus tell you.

Robert says:

"If you want to teach my kid to say no to drugs, or how to deal with bullies, okey"

So you don't think it would be better for a trained behavioural psychologist or counsellor to do training in the above two subjects?? Is this a bias??

Hey there's another good point.

Right now schools are so busy meeting (and usually failing) AYP under NCLB that makes a nutrition magic show pretty much a ludicrous waste of resources like, oh I don't know, classroom time.

It amazes me the number of people who try to do school shows, or create school show programs, or find out about funding for school programs, and yet they have no idea how schools run.

They don't know about AYP and it's significance to schools right now. They have no concept how it relates to NCLB, or about teaching in a standards based assesment environment.

A discussion not entirely dissimilar to this came up on TDL once regarding school shows. My wife (an elementary school teacher), came in and gave advice about how to get into schools, who to contact, when to contact them, what kind of knowledge they need to back up their material etc etc.

And the success gurus shot her down as if she had no clue what she was talking about. But then, no one should be surprised at that kind of attitude coming from success peddlers who are more interested in turning a buck then actually doing the work to create a good program for the benefit of the STUDENTS.

Anyhow, that got off on a tangent and I apologise for that. But listen, COACH is right - find a need that is TRULY needed. Fill that. Don't assume because ones marketing stuff looks good, or includes a few key phrases from a nutrition book (or insert topic here), that one is qualified to speak on that topic.
